apparently we all agree that skateboarding is the hottest thing right before playing piano
"So you skate?" you ask Taylor, tilting your head to the side a bit as you two walk to school.
All she gives in response is a grunt of annoyance and a turned head.
You sigh. You've been trying to make friends with Taylor for what seems like an eternity, but it's no use.
"Why don't I ever see you around?" you ask, a little louder this time as you two near school premises.
You live in the same neighbourhood as Taylor, and it perplexes you how you never seem to cross paths outside of school. Taylor always seems to be off on her own, skating around town.
She shrugs, still avoiding eye contact. "I have my spots," she says simply, as if that explains everything.
You nod, even though you don't quite understand. "Maybe you could show me sometime?"
This time, she glances at you, her eyes narrowing slightly as if she's assessing whether you're serious. "Maybe," she finally mutters before speeding up and leaving you behind as you reach the school's entrance.
Over the next few months, you continue your attempts to get closer to Taylor, and gradually, you begin to see more of her. Sometimes, you spot her at the skate park, effortlessly executing tricks that leave you in awe. Other times, you catch glimpses of her practicing in the empty parking lot near your house.
One evening, as you're walking home, you hear the familiar sound of skateboard wheels on pavement. You turn to see Taylor, her hair blowing in the wind as she glides down the street. She notices you and, to your surprise, stops.
"Hey," she says, a little out of breath. "Want to give it a try?"
You blink, taken aback by the sudden offer. "Me? Skateboarding?"
She smirks, a hint of playfulness in her eyes. "Yeah. It's not that hard. Come on, I'll teach you."
You spend the next hour with Taylor, and for the first time, you see her smile genuinely as she helps you find your balance on the board. It's in these moments you feel the connection between you two deepening, though neither of you speaks of it.
Then, one late afternoon, a few months after that impromptu lesson, you hear a knock on your door. You open it to find Taylor standing there, her skateboard tucked under her arm, looking more nervous than you've ever seen her.
"Taylor?" you say, surprised. "What are you doing here?"
She takes a deep breath, her cheeks flushed. "I . . . I need to tell you something."
Your heart races as she steps closer, her eyes locking onto yours. "I've been hiding how I feel about you for too long," she confesses, her voice trembling slightly. "I like you. A lot. And not just because you're hot, but because you're kind, and you always try to be my friend, even when I push you away."
For a moment, you're speechless, the words sinking in. Then, you find your voice. "Taylor, I like you too. I think you're amazing. And, well, I think you're pretty hot too."
She laughs, the tension breaking, and you feel a sense of relief wash over you. "So, what now?" she asks, her eyes hopeful.
"How about a skate date?" you suggest, grinning.
Taylor smiles, the nervousness fading. "Sounds perfect."
