You already had your laptop in one hand when you slipped out of bed, petting a purring Olivia on the head gently, trying not to wake your wife, who was currently sprawled on her stomach, reaching for your side of the bed.

You made your way to your office successfully, setting the laptop down on your desk and yourself in your chair, Benjamin this time coming in to meow at you, evidently for food, to which you reply, "Not now, Benj."

You'd just written about a full sentence of your reply to an email you'd gotten when you heard footsteps padding across the rug from your bedroom.

Taylor, bedhead, eyes droopy, wrapped in your hoodie and sweatpants, peeked in. "Darling, come back to sleep."

You looked up at her, stretching out a hand, a signal for her to come in and take it. When she did amble to you eventually, yawning, she took your hand, resting it on your own shoulder while her own cold one covered it, her thumb tracing over your ring, the other hand coming to massage your shoulder.

"I just have to reply to this, sweetheart," you murmured, turning your head to kiss her cheek as she bent down.

Taylor sighed softly. "My love, it's still dark outside---"

"I know," you interrupted softly, planting another kiss on her cheek and tilting her chin toward you with two fingers for a kiss on the lips. "I just need to finish this project, and then---"

Now it was her turn to interject. "Why do you work like you're running out of time?"

You hushed her gently, giving her another kiss. "I'll be back before you know I'm gone, okay?"

"Come back to sleep," Taylor pleaded, nuzzling into your cheek, your neck.

You melted against her, your mind quickly shifting from work to her heavenly touch. You smiled as you turned to capture her lips in a little kiss again. "Okay, give me five minutes."

Taylor sighed again, knowing five minutes would turn into ten, then thirty, then she'd fall back asleep on the couch in your office. So she decided to pivot, try another strategy.

She left, and came back holding your six-month-old daughter, Ellie, who was now wide awake and cooing softly at her mother.

"Come on, Mommy, let's go, Ellie's waiting for you," she said, giggling as she tilted Ellie up towards you, the little girl immediately beginning to reach for you with a babble of "Mama!"

Damn Taylor. She knew you could never deny your daughter.

You set your laptop aside just long enough to scoop Ellie up, her tiny arms wrapping around your neck as she giggled. Taylor leaned against the doorway, watching the scene with a soft, adoring smile, hair messy and hoodie slightly oversized, sleeves falling over her hands.

"See?" Taylor whispered, pressing a kiss to Ellie's forehead.

You grinned, brushing a strand of hair from your daughter's eyes. "Fine, fine," you said, swaying slightly with Ellie in your arms. "But only five minutes, promise."

Taylor chuckled, stepping closer, fingers brushing yours as if to anchor you. "Five minutes won't hurt as long as you come back to us."

Ellie wiggled happily, and you bent down to press a kiss to her tiny nose, laughing softly at the squeal that followed. Taylor crouched beside you, resting her cheek against yours, her warmth radiating like sunshine in your little office cocoon.

"I think someone's already stolen your attention," she teased, eyes sparkling.

You leaned into her, the room feeling impossibly soft, impossibly safe. "Maybe, but some things," you murmured, capturing her lips in a slow, lazy kiss, "are worth stealing for."

Ellie squealed again, clapping her tiny hands, and you and Taylor laughed, the morning stretching lazily around the three of you like a cosy, unstoppable tide.
