the title is so fucking cliché 😭
Being bullied has always been a problem for Eli--ever since first grade, he's been picked on and made to feel small. You and Taylor have tried everything: talking to the teachers, switching schools, even getting him into self-defence classes. But even there he was bullied.
You two are seriously considering home-schooling your son.
Today marks Eli's second month at his new school, and you feel your heart sink when you go to pick him up and find him crying on a bench alone, and a group of kids stand only a few yards away from him, laughing.
You swallow thickly, trying to calm yourself down, as you step out of the car and walk over to him, ignoring the sudden quiet of the kids. Maybe it's because you're heading straight for Eli, or maybe because of the crisp suit you have on that even has parents turning their heads.
Eli looks up at you as soon as he hears your footsteps, the sight of his tear-streaked face and puffy eyes making your heart break.
You kneel on the ground in front of him so you're eye-level, and gently pull him into a hug, rubbing his back. "What's the matter, sweet boy?"
He pulls away and wipes at his eyes with his jacket sleeve. "They . . . they were making fun of me again," he mumbles, avoiding your gaze, his voice barely above a whisper. He glances over at the group of kids who are now staring at their shoes or looking away, suddenly very interested in anything other than the scene unfolding before them.
You follow his gaze, your jaw clenching. It takes everything in you not to confront those kids right then and there. Instead, you focus on Eli, on the way his small shoulders shake with silent sobs. "It's okay," you murmur, pulling him into your arms again. "It's going to be okay. Let's get you home."
You help him to your car, opening the backseat door for him and buckling him in gently before pressing a kiss to his forehead. "How about we go get ice cream with Mommy?"
Eli brightens almost immediately, and he nods.
You smile at the sight of his sadness fading away slightly, and you shut the door before rounding the car and getting into the driver's seat.
"How was your day, bubba?" you ask him as you pull into the street.
Eli sits up straighter and starts to give you an animated recall of his day. "Miss Hannah was teaching us about the solar system today," Eli says, his voice gaining a hint of enthusiasm. "She said that Jupiter is so big it could fit all the other planets inside it! Isn't that cool?"
You smile, nodding as you glance at him through the rear-view mirror. His face has lit up at the thought of sharing something exciting, a sharp contrast to the tears that had stained his cheeks only moments ago. "That's really cool, Eli. I bet you already knew that though, didn't you?" you say, knowing how much he loves reading about space.
Eli nods eagerly, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah! I told her that Jupiter has this huge storm called the Great Red Spot, and she was so impressed! She even let me tell the class about it."
You chuckle, feeling a warm surge of pride. "You're a little genius, you know that? Mommy and I are so proud of you."
Eli's smile falters slightly, and you notice him chewing on his bottom lip. "But . . . the other kids . . . they said I was showing off. They called me a nerd, and they started whispering and laughing at me during recess."
Your heart sinks again, the happiness of the moment slipping away. You grip the steering wheel a bit tighter, wishing there was a way to shield him from the cruelty of other children. "You know, being smart and passionate about things isn't something to be ashamed of," you say carefully, trying to find the right words. "The kids who make fun of you . . . they just don't understand. Maybe they're a little jealous because you know so much."
Eli looks up, his eyes searching yours in the mirror. "You think so?" he asks softly.
"I know so," you say firmly. "And remember, no matter what they say, you have people who love you just the way you are. Me, Mommy, your grandparents . . . we all think you're amazing."
Eli nods, his eyes brightening a little. "Can we still get ice cream with Mommy?" he asks, his voice small.
You smile and nod. "Of course. I'll call her right now."
As you stop at a red light, you pull out your phone and hit Taylor's contact, putting it on speaker. The phone rings twice before her familiar, warm voice fills the car. "Hey, babe," she answers, sounding cheerful. "What's up?"
You glance at Eli in the rear-view mirror and see his eyes light up at the sound of his mom's voice. "Hey, Tay," you reply. "Eli and I are on our way home. We thought maybe we could all go out for some ice cream. What do you think?"
There's a brief pause, and you can almost picture Taylor's smile on the other end of the line. "That sounds perfect. I'm just finishing up here, and I can meet you guys at our usual spot. How's Eli doing?"
You hesitate for a moment, glancing back at your son. Eli looks up, catching your eye, and you see the silent plea in his expression. You know he doesn't want his Mommy to worry, but she should know. "He's okay," you say carefully, "but he's had a bit of a rough day at school. We'll fill you in when we see you."
Taylor's voice softens with concern. "Oh, my poor baby. I'll get there as soon as I can. I love you both."
"Amma and me love you, too, Mommy!" Eli says from his seat in the back, and you give your wife a smooch sound before ending the call.
When you two arrive at Eli's favourite ice cream parlour, Taylor's car us already parked in the lot, and your wife is sitting at one of the tables outside with her laptop open in front of her. You know she's supposed to be working, but she's just looking around, a little bored.
As soon as Eli spots his Mommy, his face lights up, and he breaks into a run, his earlier worries momentarily forgotten as he races towards Taylor. She stands up and sweeps him into a hug, her face softening with relief and love. "Hey, sweetheart," she says, her voice warm and soothing. "How was school today?"
Eli pulls back slightly, his cheeks flushed with excitement. "Mommy, we learned about Jupiter and I got to tell the class all about it!" His enthusiasm is evident as he recounts his moment of glory.
Taylor smiles, ruffling his hair. "That's amazing, Eli. I'm so proud of you. I can't wait to hear all about it later. But first, let's get some ice cream."
