"Kira! Since you failed to show up and help cook as assigned last night you shall help Todoroki in the kitchen today!"
Kira glanced up at Iida who chopped his arm. Obsessed with getting things back on schedule since she had messed up their dinner cooking line up. It was supposed to be her and Sato as usual. But she couldn't make it, so Mina took her place. But Mina was Todoroki's usual partner, so now Kira had to help him.
"You do realize I could have died yesterday." Kira said, looking up with an eyebrow raised.
"Of course I do!" He said back, nervously thinking of a way to salvage his schedule. "Do you... Need a few more days? I guess I could always help but then you would need to take my spot-"
"Forget it Iida." Kira shook her head. "I'll help Todoroki." She sighed. Walking to the kitchen where Todoroki was cooking.
"Hey Todoroki." She said, grabbing a knife to help cut vegetables. He cut his eyes at her, watching her without much expression.
Kira never really talked to Todoroki. He hung out with Deku and Uraraka most of the time. Plus his hard to read mind unnerved Kira and unlike Denki he didn't have a friendly demeanor to make up for it.
But Kira realized that wasn't really fair of her.
"Where's Mina?" He asked in his normal Monotoned voice.
"She helped Sato for me last night, so I'm helping you for her. If that's okay." Kira said with a smile, trying to be friendly.
"Sure." He said. They were quiet for awhile.
"She... The carrots... I wonder... Remember... Mind... Kid..."Kira really didn't get it. How he did this, she got about one word out of every sentence. The rest was all lost. Being close to Todoroki actually gave her a minor headache, because of how weird his head was.
"You can't read me... Can you?" He asked.
Kira turned in surprise. She hadn't expected him to bring it up. How did he even know?
"No. Not really, I get a few words but it's definitely not like reading other people." Kira shrugged after answering honestly.
"How'd you know?""You... Act differently around me. And you don't react to my thoughts like I've seen you do with other people." Todoroki stated while staring ahead.
"Well you're very observant." Kira shrugged.
He turned and stared at her for a second.
She stared back, uncomfortable. Glancing around, it just occurred to her that they were alone together. For the first time... Since he trapped her in the library.
"Should... She... I don't... Too much..."
"You good?" She asked with a frown.
"You really don't remember me... Do you?" He asked slowly. Kira stared at him with a frown.
"What do you mean?" She asked, tilting her head.
"Nevermind." He shook his head and looked back at the food.
"Really? You can't just backtrack like that! What are you talking about man?" Kira asked. Unlike most secrets she wanted to know this one. Most of the time she made peace with information she couldn't know.
But he started this damn conversation. She deserved to know.
"You mean we knew each other?" She prompted. Trying to lean and get into his line of sight. He put his knife down and stared forward.
"Yes." He stated. Staring straight ahead blankly like an emotionally scarred robot.
"I'm sorry... But I don't remember." Kira frowned.
"We... We went to the same quirk doctor."
He stated. Turning towards her. "When we were kids."Kira stared at him. At his face trying to remember him. But everything... Everyone.
"Oh... Sorry I... Everything from that time is kinda a blur to me. I can't even picture the doctor's face anymore. I think I blocked it out if I'm being honest.""We used to play together... In the waiting room. Or at least you tried to play with me. I... I didn't know how to do it." Todoroki continued. Not acknowledging her apology.
He sounded the same. The same even cold tone, but Kira could feel some sad emotions bubbling underneath the surface. A sort of sad nostalgia. Like he wanted to go back, like he missed it. Her.
"You were my only friend. I liked it..." He looked back over at her. "Then you disappeared and I never saw you again."
"Well... In my defense I was kidnapped." Kira said with a nervous laugh. "I didn't want to disappear."
"Right." He stared for a few more seconds and then looked away yet again. His stare was unnerving and icy. His contrasting eye colors bore into her very soul. Like he was the mindreader.
"I wasn't sure it was you... Until you told the class your quirk." He added looking at her again.
"So you... You kinda knew my quirk the whole time then?" She asked with her eyebrows raised.
"I thought it was a possibility, If I was right. Which I was." Todoroki nodded. He had completely abandoned the food now. They stood across from each other, neither really knowing what to say.
"Well... Thanks for not telling anyone I guess." Kira shrugged and looked away. The way he stared at her made her slightly uncomfortable. Like he was interrogating her, but with just his stare. She found herself wishing someone else would walk in.
"I'm sorry." He stated, causing her to look back.
"For what?" Kira asked, tilting her head.
"The Library. How I acted... I could have killed you." He said it without any expression at all. Just a blank stare, even his emotions were hard to pinpoint.
"I... Murderer... I can't... Could... Hard..."Kira shook her head. "Don't worry about it. You did what you thought was right. I was acting pretty crazy that day, and I did throw your friend out a window."
"Yeah. You did." He nodded. Let out a long sigh and turned back to the food. "Can you pass me the skewers?" He asked.
And just like that he moved back to making dinner. Leaving Kira in shock.
So not only did she find out that Todoroki used to know her as a kid. But also that this whole time he knew what her quirk was.
Then he apologized to her, which she honestly didn't expect him to do. Especially not randomly, so long after it actually happened.
She didn't know what to make of him. She understood he had a hard life, still does. That's why he seemed so detached. And now she realized he felt like she had abandoned him... This whole time.
Maybe she should make more of an effort to befriend him again.
She handed the sticks over for him to skewer the vegetables with. He worked quickly, but he didn't have the same expert precision that Bakugou did when he was working. He cut carefully, but still messed up fairly often. "Not... Fuyumi... How... I hope... That... Be bad... Think... Clear."
Yeah Kira had nothing. She couldn't even really piece the words into coherent sentences.
Todoroki's icy mind truly was a mystery.
