Bang

It was all in slow motion.

Everything that happened seemed so... predictable.

Yet Kira didn't even have the chance to stop it. A part of her saw it coming but she didn't think it was real. She was too slow to do anything... Too sick to think.

But he wasn't. His feet moving on their own.

The bullet tore through skin. Through flesh, bone and lung. Releasing blood from where it nestled in the veins crossing over his chest.

Zane fell.

Kira screamed.

Momma screamed.

The gun dropped to the ground with a click.

Momma fell to her knees with a thud.

Zane laid on the ground. Eyes wide and terrified as lights danced in his vision. Kira dropped and knelt over him. Every part of her trembled as she covered the wound quickly. "Zane! Zane stay with me!" Kira yelled at him.

Blood poured around her fingers. She thought she heard Momma sobbing but she wasn't listening to her. Just Zane as he took in a shaky breath.

Blood trickled from his mouth.

"Kira..." He whispered.

"No! No shh..." Kira said frantically. Something about the situation made her forget her fever. The haze was cut by adrenaline. She looked at the wound, positioned close to the middle of his chest. Off by just a few inches.

It was bleeding a lot and Kira couldn't stop it. She looked at it frantically and did the only thing she could think of to plug the hole. Grimacing as she slid her finger into the wound.

"It's gonna be okay... Alright?" Kira whispered. "It's gonna be alright."

She could feel his heartbeat against her finger. It was slower than she thought it should be. Her finger was coated in thick warm blood that was pumped through him towards the open wound. Kept in only by her.

"Thank you Kira." Zane whispered. "You freed me."

"No! No don't talk like that Zane." Kira shook her head. "Save it. W-we can say shit like that later!"

She didn't want to hear it. Last wishes, thankfulness. It seemed too close to goodbye.

She didn't want to hear that right now. She was sick of goodbyes.

"She was right... In choosing freedom... I was a slave... The one she refused to be... Now... Now I'm free...."

"Stop it! Zane please!" Kira begged. She couldn't see him well through the tears in her eyes. She felt them sting the wounds pressed against her bandages. Slid down her cheek.

"I'm glad I met you...." Zane Mumbled. Voice trembling. "I'm glad I... I got to be brave like you... Like a hero..."

He was interrupted by a cough.

"Stop! S-stop talking like you're gonna die." Kira pleaded. "There are pros here... Th-they'll come help you! They're gonna save us just hold on a little longer... Please..."

"Sorry...." Zane Mumbled. He reached up and touched her face. Yellow eyes peering into her. Piercing and bright. They seemed to glow in the soft light that trickled in from the hallway. "I wish..."

"She's... She's so pretty..." He thought absently. Looking past the bulking bandage on her face. Past the dirt from the floor and her greasy hair.

"I wish I could have gotten to know you more..." He whispered. "Under... More normal circumstances..."

"You can! You can Zane!" Kira pleaded. Begging him to hold on. "Please you can come with me... You can stay at UA. They'll let you! I'll make them let you."
