1979

You stood backstage watching your best friend perform in awe, amazed at the true beauty of his voice, his untouchable stage presence and how prominent he really was as a singer and frontman. You had always believed in him and his potential, you knew he could get this far in his career and he had.

You were a loyal and supportive friend, so that was an obvious factor in your unwavering faith in Freddie, but you also had quite more than a bit of feelings for him. You had been having those feelings for quite a few years, and you certainly didn't see your crush on the Persian ever being returned.

The band had just finished up with 'spread your wings' and now were going to do a song called 'Love of my life', a very beautiful and tender song Freddie had written a few years ago. Roger and John exited the stage since they weren't needed for that song and oddly, while Brian was talking to the audience Freddie too went backstage which surprised you. It surprised you even more when he walked straight over to you, a slightly nervous expression on his face.

"Hey, what's going on?' You asked gently, unsure what Freddie's odd retreating to backstage was about.

"D-Darling, um...I just wanted to ask you something." He began a bit timidly, rubbing the back of his neck.

"No offense but you might wanna make it quick, Bri can't exactly talk to those people all night." You pointed out a bit too bluntly, making you wince at the fact as that didn't seem to soothe Freddie's anxiety.

"I-I just wanted to ask if um, if you wanted to perhaps um-c-come out and sing the song with me?" He asked softly, making your eyes widen.

"M-Me? Why do you wanna sing it with me?" You questioned in surprise.

"W-Well you know I like switching things up live, making it more interesting...and I thought it could sound nice if we sang the song together." He bit his lip.

You didn't know what to say to that.  You'd never come on stage to sing with Freddie before and despite being an artist yourself, you weren't really too sure whether or not you should.

"A-Are you sure?" You asked self consciously.

"Y-You don't have to, I-I just thought they might like it a-and it'd be something new." He backpedaled, quickly getting shy and embarrassed.

"Well if you want me to I will, I just didn't expect you to ask that that's all." You blushed a bit.

"You have a great voice Y/N, you'd do great I know you would." Freddie smiled softly.

"Well let's do it then." You chuckled a bit nervously, Freddie beaming at your answer as you followed him onstage, the crowd roaring when they saw you.

"Sorry, had to grab a little something or better someone backstage. This uh, this is a song called love of my life and I'll be joined by miss Y/N L/N tonight to sing it." Freddie spoke up, you bowing theatrically despite your inner hesitance.

Brian started gently playing the beginning of the song on his acoustic guitar, you and Freddie next to each other as the frontman began to sing.

"Love of my life...You've hurt me...you've broken my heart, and now you leave me...Love of my life, can't you see?"

"Bring it back, bring it back...Don't take it away from me because, you don't know what it means to me..."

The crowd cheered for Freddie, you smiling to yourself at how tender he sounded before Freddie gave you a gentle nod, gesturing for you to sing the next verse.

"Love of my life, don't leave me..." You leaned into the microphone, trying to keep your singing steady.

"You've stolen my love, and now desert me..."

"Love of my life, can't you see?" You and Freddie harmonized with each other, the two of you singing in sync sounding like a dream.

"Bring it back, bring it back...don't take it away from me because, you don't know what it means to me..."

Freddie smiled as you paused singing, a proud look on his face with an almost loving look in his eyes.

"You will remember, when this is blown over, and everything's all by the way..." You sang as Brian kept playing gently and Freddie took over the next part.

"When I grow older, I will be there at your side, to remind you...how I still love you..."

"I still love you..."

Your merged vocals were delicate as ever, and you wanted nothing more than to kiss Freddie...this was probably your favorite moment you ever had with him and nothing would do a better job of officially making it your favorite as Freddie's lips on yours would. But that was only  possible in your dreams...

Brian gently strummed the guitar solo, you and Freddie sharing a look of an unspecified emotion for quite a while as the audience was adoring everything that they saw.

"Oh, hurry back...hurry back...don't take it away from me because, you don't know...what it means to me..." You looked directly at Freddie when you sang that, the latter looking down to hide the color on his cheeks as he joined in.

"Love of my life, love of my life...Oooo...Yeah..."

The three of you bowed for the wildly applauding audience, you waving farewell to the crowd as you went to leave.

Freddie gently grabbed your arm and looked uncertain for a moment, releasing a groan that was buried under the screams of the audience which only grew at what he did next, which was exactly what you desperately wanted him to do but didn't ever think he would.

He cupped your cheek and closed the gap between you, kissing you needingly but not too hungrily as the fact you were before so many people was still intact.

You were too flabbergasted to do anything as Freddie gently pulled away, a shy look on his face as he tried to search for your reaction.

You just smiled wider than you ever had in your life, nodding aghastly at Freddie mouthing 'We'll talk about this later'.

You found it in your weak legs to walk out, passing by Roger and John who had knowing smirks on their faces as they took their places onstage.

You just collapsed in the chair closest to you, unable to stop grinning at what transpired for the rest of the night.

The end.
