I do a double take. At first, I thought it was a big pile of leaves (I only glimpsed it out of the corner of my eye). But when I look back, my stomach drops.
It's a dude.
He's lying on his side, face covered in an off-putting mixture of mud and blood. He's wearing a black leather jacket that looks worse for wear and, in my defence, there are a good number of leaves scattered upon him. How long has he been there?
I wonder if I should call an ambulance, but he looks pretty dead to me. I nudge him with my shoe, not keen on touching him.
I scream when he stirs.
At first, he twitches, and then his eyes snap open - bright blue in the dim evening light. He sniffs, groans, and manages to sit up, hands splayed out on the ground behind him.
"Are you okay?"
He looks up at me, surprisingly lucid for someone who just arose from the dead.
"Yeah, I'm good. Bloody hell, my head hurts."
I don't know what I expected him to sound like but I didn't think he was British. He also seems... annoyed about his condition. Eerily chill about it. He rubs his temple and I notice chipped black polish on his fingernails.
I should probably ask him if I can get him anything but instead I ask, "What happened ?"
"You know what? I don't remember."
He looks around.
"I should call an ambulance."
"I'm fine." he tells me without missing a beat. Even if he sounds fine, he doesn't look fine. I also realise I'm alone in a park with a strange man caked in dirt and blood which probably isn't the safest situation. Although it strikes me that I'd be no worse off if I ran away, I want to make sure he is really okay.
I offer him my hand.
He takes it.
Once standing, he studies me for a long moment. My heart-rate just about triples - I'm not exactly scared of him but I am unsure of him. Like he can read my mind, he says, "I'm not going to hurt you. And sorry if I gave you a fright, there."
I nod. "I'm good. But I'm still not convinced you are."
He tilts his head to the side and there must be something seriously wrong with me because I find it weirdly attractive. I have the sudden urge to invite him back to mine so he can clean up but I'm not actually that stupid.
"Thank you for..." he smirks, searching for the right way to sum up this bizarre interaction, "Waking me up."
"Anytime."
The smirk stays on his face as he nods, "I'll be seeing you, then."
"Yeah..."
He walks off down the path and I start to walk in the direction to my house. I take about two steps when I stop and call, "Hey, I never got your name..." but by the time I've turned around, he's gone.
