Mia had enjoyed Autumn's company over the past few evenings. The two were hardly giggling away and talking each other's ear off, but they shared some personal moments and deep conversations surrounding their past. It was almost as if the past 20 years never happened, if only it weren't for the scars that stained their souls.
Charlotte and Mia had both been anxious knowing individually that they were ready to have the dreaded conversation. They'd been so anxious to the point that when Charlotte dropped by in the mornings, tension and uncertainty began to linger again, making the visits short and sweet. They both knew what they had to face tonight when Charlotte made her way over after work this evening.
Mia heard Charlotte's car pull up outside and the nerves crept in. She wanted to be with Charlotte, she loved her dearly, but there was an overwhelming sense of fear that this conversation could put an end to their feigned reality. Charlotte stopped outside the front door, taking a deep breath trying to level her thoughts. She was finally ready to listen to Mia, and she prayed for a damn good explanation about that wretched kiss that turned their lives upside down.
"Hi, baby." Mia greeted Charlotte from the sofa as she walked in the door. She had been sat patiently in the same spot for hours, not wanting to push herself too hard and having already taken some painkillers to subside any aches and pains. The redhead needed to preserve any energy she had so that she could form a coherent conversation with her sweetheart and, took all the precautionary measures to ensure it runs smoothly. Charlotte sat beside Mia on the sofa, greeting her with a deep kiss before the two of them settled with their foreheads pressed together.
"You know I love you right?" Charlotte started off in a whisper, her voice a bit shaky with apprehension.
"Sssh, baby, let me start...please?" Mia interrupted, sensing her sweetheart's hesitation. Charlotte pulled away from Mia and met her gaze. She did need to hear what Mia had to say, but it was only fair that she got to express her pain first. Charlotte needed to be firm with Mia after tiptoeing around the confrontation for so long, it was time she put her backbone to good use."No. Before you say anything, I need you to know how much you hurt me" Charlotte asserted, taking Mia by surprise, her widened eyes now being joined by furrowed brows in concern. Mia knew how much pain she'd caused Charlotte, and her stomach started to churn as she realised she was about to hear it out loud.
Charlotte continued as Mia listened intently, the two not breaking eye contact for even a second. "To hear that you kissed someone? Yes, that was a huge betrayal and it felt like I had just lost a limb. But what hurt more, Amelia, is that you pushed me away and treated me like a stranger. Instead, you could've just come to me the second it happened and saved us both all this pain and heartache!" Charlotte started to raise her voice. She closed her eyes for a moment trying to calm herself down before she continued.
"Mia" Charlotte exhaled as she proceeded. "I was angry about the kiss, okay? But look where we are now. You almost died because you got behind the wheel of a car, drunk, and I nearly lost you forever!" Charlotte was trembling, tears now forming in her eyes. "So many sleepless nights, wondering what I did wrong, thinking that you lost interest in me..." and that was it, Charlotte broke.
The pained cries echoed through the room and sent a sharp pain through Mia's chest. It hadn't occurred to the redhead that Charlotte would blame this on herself, and she had now realised the full extent of the damage she'd caused. She was bound by her old ways. Shutting down, isolating herself, seeking harm and chaos...it seemed to be Mia's thing. If there was ever a chance of moving forward with Charlotte, she knew that had to change.
Mia didn't respond just yet. Instead, she pulled her distraught sweetheart into a warm embrace, stroking her hair to try and ease the sobs. "You gave up on us too easily, Amelia" Charlotte whispered into Mia's chest as the hollow cries became shaky and breathy sniffles. Mia was now holding back her own tears as she held Charlotte close. The pair took a moment to breathe, letting themselves endure the pain that they had been carrying around for weeks.
