AN: So I hadn't intended for this to be pretty much a whole chapter of smut, but here we are! I've gotten it out of my system and it won't happen again...I'm so sorry for what you're about to read 😅
Mia initially giggled a little, thinking that Charlotte was just overly expressing her liking for the bag. But when Charlotte continued to hold her meaningful gaze, not returning the laughter, Mia realised her sweetheart was in fact being serious. The redhead went silent, her face almost looking concerned as she processed Charlotte's words.
It wasn't that she was in any way upset or questioning the proposal, she was just shocked. Particularly since Charlotte had recently expressed that she didn't yet feel ready to re-marry. Mia had always imagined that she'd be the one to propose with some elaborate plan, or grand gesture, coupled with an overpriced diamond ring, once Charlotte had indicated to her that she was willing to commit.
Now readers, you may think that Mia was robbed of a big romantic proposal here, knowing how over the top she can be. But you see, Mia was often taking her sweetheart by surprise with her grand gestures and generous gifts. Charlotte wasn't as well off as Mia, and having two children and an average paying job didn't leave much room for the fancy dinners and the flashy wardrobe that she always desired. Although Charlotte wouldn't love Mia any less if she were to be working class like herself, being with her did have its perks. She always felt a little guilty that she could never match Mia's expensive presents or always offer to pay for dinner when they went to the higher end restaurants. Despite being smart with her money over the years and having savings stashed away for a rainy day, since the divorce, Charlotte was mostly living pay-check to pay-check. Even Violet and Lily would reap the benefits of Mia's investment dividends as the redhead couldn't resist spoiling them whenever they went on a day out.
In this moment, Charlotte was offering Mia the best gift that money could never buy. Herself. She was finally ready to give her all to Mia, every flaw, every quirk, and every heartbeat. Char realised it may not have been ideal timing with their fertility appointment approaching, and big decisions and change dawning. But it didn't matter. Whether their engagement be 3 months or 3 years, Charlotte would marry the light of her life and declare her love before all their friends and family. It no longer bothered her that she had done it before. As traditional as her views on marriage had been previously, the idea of standing at the alter with Mia by her side, transcended all.
"Mia, please say something" Charlotte said, voice barely above a whisper as doubt began to creep in, resulting from Mia's hesitation and uncertainty. Mia shook herself out of her daze, realising that she was most likely making her sweetheart feel on edge.
"Sorry, sweetheart, you just took me by surprise that's all. Are you sure this is what you want? Because I would understand if you didn't really mean it and it was just a heat of the moment kinda thing..." the redhead began to ramble as the nerves kicked in.She had never wanted to say 'yes' so fast, but was too focused on worrying about whether Charlotte was being sincere and if she was truly ready for this commitment. Mia didn't want to rush her, knowing that she may have still been healing from the loss of her first marriage. There was a lingering fear that Charlotte would grow resentful if they got married before she had fully processed everything, and Mia was in it for the long haul. If it took waiting a millennium, then she would. Mia would wait for Charlotte and find her in every life just to be her wife.
Charlotte could see the thoughts spiralling and got up from her seat, positioning herself on Mia's lap as she placed her hands on either side of her face to draw her focus. With Char's face only centimetres apart from Mia's and their eyes fixated on each other's in a deep and affectionate gaze, Charlotte reiterated. "Amelia, I'll ask you again, so you know just how much I mean it. Will you marry me?" Her voice delicate and thick with sincerity and emotion, as she eagerly awaited Mia's response.
