AN: you may want to re-read "Is that something you want?" first to remind you of some of Mia's fears

Charlotte and Mia had been basking in their newly engaged bliss, bond now stronger than ever as they prepared to enter a new week. Violet and Lily were thrilled that Mia was to formally be a part of their family. "Does that mean you'll officially be our mum?" Lily, the youngest, asked excitably. Sending a gush of butterflies through both Mia and Charlotte as they felt nothing but unwavering acceptance and approval from their daughter. Char's ex-husband had also been extremely supportive of her new relationship status when he heard the news from their daughters.
"About time" He teased playfully as he handed over a congratulatory bottle of champagne to the couple, dropping off the girls off one evening.

The celebrations had died down, and everyone had now become accustomed to the ring that proudly graced Mia's finger, yet the couple still had so much more to look forward to. Their fertility appointment was approaching in just a few short hours, and Charlotte and Mia had been practically giddy in anticipation. Although they each had their own reservations, growing their family and fulfilling Mia's desires for a newborn had become increasingly important to them both.

Charlotte greeted Marjorie in the office as per usual habit when arriving at work in the morning, reminding her manager that she would be taking a longer lunch than usual to account for her appointment with Mia. "Oh your fertility appointment, of course! How are you feeling about it?" Marjorie asked Charlotte, recalling several conversations she had with her friend previously surrounding her anxieties.

Charlotte had been honest with Marjorie, admitting that she never saw herself having any more children. However, much like she had made clear to her lover, her heart wanted whatever Mia wanted. Situations change as people grow, Charlotte had explained to her friend when asserting that she was ready for this next step with her mean redhead. Back when Charlotte had been going through a downwards spiral after her separation, wallowing in the shadows and wrapping herself in darkness, it was Mia that brought her back to the light and kept her heart ticking. And Charlotte would do anything for the light of her life, to return that favour. If having a baby was to bring Mia endless joy and gratification, then Charlotte's heart could only tick faster and grow fonder for the idea.

Lunchtime quickly came around, and Mia had arrived promptly at the nursery to pick up her sweetheart. They shared a quick kiss and Charlotte grabbed a hold of Mia's hand, squeezing it tightly. "You ready for this?" She asked the redhead softly, her voice laced with nerves. But, the good kind. Mia stayed quiet, her voice failing her as she nodded in response trying to assure Char that she was okay. The redhead was inevitably wracked with her own nerves, stemming from the guilt she carried from not thinking about her future sooner. Was it too late? Would the past couple of years of treating her body like a temple have compensated for the lifetime of damage and abuse she'd caused herself? Mia's mind ran rampant with cries of doubt, but she kept it to herself. They would soon find out.

Time passed slowly as Charlotte and Mia awaited patiently to hear the outcome of their evaluation at the fertility clinic. Blood tests, ultrasounds, pelvic exams, lifestyle questionnaires. They listened intently as the specialist explained each one and what they'd be looking for. Their hands remained intertwined as they sat side by side and their grip tightened as the specialist took her seat in front of them with results in hand. The future of their family relied on just a couple pieces of paper.

The specialist had a lighthearted and positive approach as she delivered her findings. Charlotte and Mia smiled to each other as Charlotte's results revealed that she was still in perfect shape to carry a child, should that be what they chose. Unsurprising really, as she had successfully carried two perfect babies to term already.  Then a cloud of daunting uncertainty lingered as the pair prepared themselves to hear Mia's results. Their hands gripped so tightly to one another's that their knuckles turned white.
