"Why did you lie? Do you even know how much I panicked because of your terrible lie? Do you know how scared I was when Maasi said you are not well? Mamma, how could you lie about your health just to bring me here? And why is the house decorated like this? I asked her in anger after hearing her reason. How could she do this to me? How could she lie about her health to me?"
But after seeing that I was getting angry, Mama left a sigh and said in a calm way,
"Meeru, actually we have fixed your engagement with Aditya. We wanted to surprise you both, that's why we decided to tell you tomorrow morning after their arrival. But you got mad."
After hearing her words, my mind went blank. I stared at her continuously with wide eyes and an open mouth, unable to digest what she had just said. In the same state, I looked towards Maasi,
who nodded in a positive but tense manner.
I don't know how to feel; am I feeling anger, frustration, irritation, suffocation, or is it panic and anxiety? I felt like I was really going to lose my mind because of these people. For a minute, I forgot to even breathe. I wanted to cry in frustration, but at the same time, I didn't want to because of my anger.
I should have known when she got excited after hearing that Adi was with me in Mumbai. Maybe she started her planning and plotting after that call on the same night.
Oh God...! Why are you doing this to me? Why are you giving me this shocking treatment continuously...? Thinking all this, I fell on the sofa, feeling down. My aunt came and sat next to me, starting to rub my back to calm me down.
After a few seconds, I slowly raised my gaze and looked around the hall. It was fully decorated with flowers, and on one wall, the flowers were heavily arranged with our names written in bold letters: MEERA AND ADITYA. After this, I shifted my angry gaze to my mother, who was looking at me with a confused frown.
Staring at her in anger, I asked her,
"What is this, Mom? Do you think this engagement is a surprise for me? No, Mom, this is horribly shocking to me!"
Hearing me, she looked at me with a straight face. I continued,
"How did you think this would make me happy? How did you think that we're okay with it? Did you ask us before planning all of this? Did you even ask him for his opinion? Did he or I ever tell you that we are even thinking about each other? No, right? So, how and why did you assume that we would agree to marry each other, Mom?"
Upon hearing this, she said with a frown on her face,
"We saw that you both were comfortable with each other and seemed happy as well. You guys went on dates in Mumbai. When we asked you, after the first date with him, you did not deny it as you always do. As for him, he never openly admitted it, but we could see that he likes you. Otherwise, why would he go all the way to Mumbai to meet you?"
After hearing her nonsensical imagination, I just want to pull my hair so badly. Looking at my exasperation, Maasi start's to rub my back to cool my temper, which stopped when Mamma started saying all her nonsense.
"Mamma, I didn't even agree when you asked about him. We talked about it and we had mutually decided to decline the proposal at the café only, where we went for a blind date. So, I thought he would deny it when you ask him. About coming to Mumbai, he came there for his work, not to meet me. We are just friends, Mamma. We don't have any romantic
feelings for each other, it's just friendship.
aur aap apana dimaag chalaana thoda kam keejiye"(and try to use your brain little less)
saying this, I yelled at her, then covered my face with my hand in frustration and leaned on the couch.
Mamma didn't say anything for a minute due to shock; she stood there like a statue with wide eyes. After staring at me for a few minutes, she said,
"Look Meeru, at least you did inform us about your disapproval earlier. All this would not have happened today, but now what happened has happened. We can't change it now, so get engaged. This is the only option left for us."
hearing her I looked at her and said in anger
"Whenever we try to say anything about this, you always deny hearing it. And now you are accusing me of it." Hearing this, she looked at me in anger, and I continued, "I am not going to engage with anyone, mamma, even if this is the only last option."
after saying this in anger I end up with small sobs. now I can't handle this anymore... I can't...
