"This is where our story started. Do you remember?" Aastha asked, her eyes twinkling. Veer's heart stopped beating for a few seconds as he froze.
"What?"
"Don't you remember? We fought here in our childhood!" Aastha said excitedly, and Veer felt a shiver run down his spine.
A very brief memory from his past life as Mohan zoomed into his mind.
It was somewhere in 1805 when he first visited Rudragarh as a little boy with his best buddy Yudhisthira. Yudhisthira had taken him around the fort, showing him everything, including Avantika's performance. Just then, he had heard the sharp noises of sword fighting from the courtyard. Being a prince and someone who was unbeatable in sword fighting at that young age, Mohan had been curious.
Mohan found himself wandering towards the central courtyard, where sword fighting was being practiced. He was curious to know who was fighting. Right in the middle, was none other than Radhika, happily rejoicing her win. Avantika's twin and Yudhisthira's other sister. Amazed at her resilience and charm, Mohan had been spellbound as she fought against everyone who stood in front of her with grace and confidence.
"Who's next?" she had asked, and like a moth to a flame, he had entered the maidaan with a talvar in hand, "I am."
It had been their first meeting and the first words they had shared. It was undoubtedly a tough match. Mohan was an expert in sword fighting, but keeping up with Radhika's attacks had left him to defend himself. He had tried really hard to fight back, but every time his eyes met hers, he felt himself losing. They had fought for a while before he accepted his defeat.
"We will meet again," Mohan told her. "So that you lose again?" she had joked. "Every fight isn't the same, Radhika," he had told her. And just like that, their story had begun. Needless to say, it hadn't ended happily.
"VEER!" Aastha called him, and he had to shake himself out of his thoughts. Sweat broke out, and another wave of shudder passed through his body. What was she saying?
"Sorry, I didn't catch what you said.. what were you saying?" Veer stuttered, shocked. Did he hear her right? or was his mind playing tricks? Oh God! Rudragarh was such a bad idea.
"I asked you if you remember the time we fought here. It's like all this... whatever happened... began right here!" she repeated, smiling, and Veer stared at her, unable to respond.
Rolling her eyes, she stood in front of him. "For someone who remembers his past life, you have completely forgotten your childhood memories of your current life, haven't you, Veer?" she asked, poking his chest.
Veer stumbled but straightened himself, letting go of the relieved breath he didn't know he had been holding for so long. "Childhood?"
"Yeah!" Aastha chirped. Realizing he didn't remember, she looped her arm with his and began to narrate the moments from their childhood.
