Damien and I had never returned to the the topic of my recovery but something had shifted between us, which I couldn't quite pin-point. I felt closer to him in a sense, but closer wasn't even the way to begin to describe what I was feeling. Everything felt heightened around him, there was I draw that I felt towards him. The easiest way to describe the feeling was like magnets. I was probably going insane in all honesty, and Damien was likely just being more supportive and caring then he needed to be, but I couldn't help but feel pull towards him.
After waking up to Damien lightly snoring beside me, I had returned here. The place that I continuously could not escape. I sighed at the thought and proceeded to the library but stopped when I heard a commotion outside the front door.
I opened the door to see all the guards gathered in a circle, and Nathan's voice hollering from the middle, barking orders. I quickly slipped on the nearest shoes, and silently made my way down the driveway to get a closer look at what was unfolding. I shoved my way into a gap between two guards and I could see the agitation rolling off of Nathan. His body was trembling, his hands were balled into tight fists. He was moments away from transforming, but using all his might to hold back. My eyes finally made their way down to Nathan's feet, to observe his foot pressed against someone's face.
"Tell me when you decided to join my ranks," Nathan snarled. "Enlighten us all, because I have a very good feeling I know when."
The guy beneath his foot let out a loud scream as the pressure increased.
"Can't answer?" Nathan snapped. "Let me answer for you. When I got her back, which is convenient isn't it? And now you think you can leave with my personal documents and hand them over to someone else? Who sent you, Ryder?"
I looked around the circle of guards gathered, and no one had noticed my appearance, not even Nathan. Everyone's eyes were dead set on the performance that was unfolding before them. I focused in on the man underneath Nathan's foot to see if he was familiar, but the closer I looked, the more I could see he was just a boy. He was bloodied and bruised, and I can guarantee that was Nathan's doing.
"Nothing to say?" Nathan scoffed, and the boy used all his remaining effort to spit at Nathan's shoes.
"You're pathetic," the boy strained, and a tremble visibly passed through Nathan's body. I continued to watch in horror as Nathan bent down and gripped him by his shirt collar, further cutting off his air circulation. Before I knew what I was doing, I spoke.
"Nathan," I breathlessly let out, and his head snapped up towards me.
"What are you doing here?" Nathan snarled, instantly releasing the boy, letting his body hit the ground and an audible crunch rang through my ears.
This series of events were not intended for my eyes, and by the look in Nathans eyes, he would do everything to ensure it remained that way.
"Craig," he snapped. "Take her inside."
"No!" I panicked and shoved through the circle, grasping for Nathan. "Please, this isn't the answer. Please don't hurt him."
In an instant, all the anger that was reserved for the trespasser, shifted towards me. Nathan's eyes became glazed with fury, and he gripped my arm, pulling me roughly out of his circle of men.
"You do not get to pick and choose when you want to make joint decisions with me," he viciously snarled. "For someone who doesn't want to be a part of this as you kindly put it yesterday, you seem to have a lot of opinions on how things operate around here. Do you want to make decisions with me on how I rule? Or only when it suits your agenda?"
He left the question up in the air, and I failed to reply.
"You do not get to tell me what I can and cannot do, especially in front of my men." He snarled. "Why don't you go shove your face back into one of your books, and mind your own fucking business."
