Today was the first day of something new. Summer had finally faded, and everything was starting to take a turn. Today was the first day of University, something exciting to look forward to and I could barely wait to get out of this apartment and start.
Somehow I felt like a teen all over again, with that first day school excitement, and the nervousness that intertwined with every thought and decision. I grabbed the first available outfit, and did a once over in the mirror. Good enough, I thought. What was the point of trying to impress and stand out when Nathan wouldn't spare anyone who took a second glance at me, let alone a first.
"You ready?" Nathan asked, strolling into my room without an invitation. He immediately found himself at my side, and planted a kiss on my cheek. He held me against him, as he looked at us in the mirror, and a wide grin spread over his face.
"You look beautiful," he said, and nuzzled his lips into my neck.
"We should get going," I quickly said, pulling away from his touch. "Wouldn't want to be late on my first day."
"Wait a second," he paused, continuing to stare at my neckline in the mirror. "Where's the necklace?"
"Oh," I shrugged. "Sorry, I was in a rush to get ready, that I hadn't even thought about accessorizing."
"You should wear it." He grunted.
I nodded in reply, and quickly grabbed it from my bedroom and clasped it around my neck.
"Better?" I asked, and he nodded in confirmation.
We made our way to his car, and I started to feel uneasy about relying on Nathan for yet another thing.
"So if ever we can't drive in together, is there a bus route that goes there?" I asked, seeking independence and my mornings away from him.
"There's a stop two blocks away from the building, and there's maybe six stops along the way, but it should take you directly to campus."
"Perfect," I beamed.
"Don't worry, I'll be able to drive you, it's much faster." He replied.
"Don't you ever think about taking the bus? Save on parking?" I asked.
The image of Nathan on a bus made me crack up, there was no way in hell he'd ever.
"It's a cost I don't really care about," Nathan shrugged.
I'm sure I wouldn't either if my parents were bank rolling me.
"I'm done around lunch today," Nathan said. "How about you?"
"I think around lunch as well." I answered.
"I'll meet you at your last class," Nathan said. "I'll be at the entrance of the building. I took a picture of your schedule.
"How?"
"You left it on your table," he replied.
"Right" I nodded, so there would be no escape from Nathan on campus either. Not even for a day, seeing as he now would always know my where abouts.
"Are you excited?" I asked."Not really," he said. "It's the last year of my degree, I just want to get it done and dusted. I don't really even see the point, it's not like I'm going to need it."
"Don't you need it to get a job?" I asked, rolling my eyes.
"That's what connections are for," Nathan shrugged. "Obviously it's good to have, but at this point, I'm barely learning anything new."
He was dripping with entitlement, and I wasn't sure why I was so surprised at his lack of awareness when it came to his privilege.
