Morning didn't arrive gently.
It came with a dull, dragging ache low in Emerson's abdomen, pulling her out of sleep before she could even fully wake. For a moment, she lay still beneath the covers as the discomfort sharpened. She tried to ignore it, until the second wave hit, curling inward like a warning she couldn't dismiss.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Emerson muttered under her breath, pressing a hand lightly against her stomach as the realisation hit.
Perfect timing.
Across the room, Olivia stirred faintly at the sound, shifting beneath her blankets before pushing herself up onto one elbow. Her blonde hair was a mess, falling into her face as she blinked blearily at Emerson.
"You sound thrilled," She mumbled.
Emerson turned her head just enough to look at her. "I'm in pain. Take a guess."
Olivia rubbed her eyes and stared at Emerson for a moment, metally connecting the dots. "Hm. That look is very specific."
Emerson let out a pained exhale, dragging a hand over her face. "It's my period."
Olivia winced sympathetically. "Tragic."
Emerson gave a small, unimpressed hum in response, already pushing herself upright with more effort than usual. The movement didn't help, the ache settling deeper, making her wince faintly as she swung her legs over the side of the bed.
Olivia watched her for a moment, then offered. "Do you want me to get you something? I've got potions in my trunk. It's nothing amazing, but it might take the edge off."
"It's okay I'll survive," Emerson replied.
Olivia smiled, her usual teasing slipping back in. "Well, at least the contraceptive charm worked."
Emerson froze mid-movement. Then she turned her head slowly, narrowing her eyes at Olivia in a perfectly unimpressed glare. "Liv."
"What?" Olivia shrugged, entirely unapologetic. "I'm just saying. Could've been a worse surprise."
Emerson shook her head, though there was the faintest hint of amusement breaking through her discomfort. "I'm going to shower," She said, already pushing herself out of bed, moving carefully as she gathered what she needed.
"Good plan," Olivia replied lightly, stretching slightly before flopping back against her pillows. "Hot water fixes everything. Or at least makes it less miserable."
Emerson huffed quietly in agreement, disappearing into the bathroom and closing the door behind her. The warmth of the shower helped a little, the steady stream easing some of the tension in her muscles, though the ache never fully disappeared.
