A little bit over two months went by before Liu Mingyan felt that she had made good enough progress to send off a report that she was proud of. Her plan had worked more or less flawlessly. It took a little while, but now the border town had become a rather bustling place. Humans and demons alike walked the streets and even on the other side of the border humans frequented the place.
A couple of people who just couldn't accept the change had started leaving the area, but they were not many. Liu Mingyan finished her report with hopeful words and was just about to seal it and bring it to the courier when Sha Hualing popped up behind her.
"Oh, you're sending the report? Let me write something too!" she said excitedly. Liu Mingyan sighed and made way. Sha Hualing almost completely leaned over the table, obstructing the view on the paper as she wrote. When Liu Mingyan tried to peek at her letter, Sha Hualing put her hand in the way. "No peeking," she said, "You aren't allowed to see."
"Are you going to complain about me in that?" Liu Mingyan asked skeptically.
"Of course not!" Sha Hualing said quickly, "Why would I complain about you?"
"You tell me," Liu Mingyan replied with a frown.
She really couldn't make sense of Sha Hualing sometimes. The demoness was always caught between being excited and nagging about something with her expression uncaring. Liu Mingyan sealed up the report together with Sha Hualing's note and shook her head. Sometimes Sha Hualing tried to massage her back or wash her and then at other times again she would just–
Her trail of thoughts got interrupted by the same action she was about to refer to. She was tackled off the chair with a loud "Sneak attack!" and forced to engage in hand to hand combat with the suddenly very fight hungry demoness. Since her wound had healed up completely, she had done this many times.
By now Liu Mingyan should have gotten to be more on guard, but she was never seriously injured, so she didn't bother and just took it as an opportunity to train a little. Most of the time she won these little matches, but this time it was Sha Hualing who came up on top. Literally.
Liu Mingyan lay on the ground, looking expressionlessly up at Sha Hualing sitting on her stomach, gasping for air. "Are you satisfied with yourself now?" she asked.
"Verily," Sha Hualing replied, smiling victoriously, "And? Are you impressed by my strength now?"
"Better than last time," Liu Mingyan said in reply.
She had to be honest, this demoness was stronger than other people. They wouldn't just manage to throw her to the ground like this. But she wasn't just going to feed the woman's ego like this.
"You know, even if I wanted to, there's nothing I could find that I could complain about," Sha Hualing suddenly said. She leaned down a little and smiled a bit more calmly. "You're strong and beautiful. You aren't scared of me. You don't cover before me, but you also don't command me around. You treat me with respect and no fear. I like you."
Liu Mingyan didn't know why her face was suddenly so warm or why her heart beat so quickly, but it was so much that she had to turn her head away. Sha Hualing casually dropped a kiss on the cheek that was turned to her and then she got up just as quickly.
"Let's go send the letter," she said enthusiastically, "I want a reply as soon as possible!"
Liu Mingyan stayed on the ground for a moment longer, then she finally got herself to get up as well, rubbing at her cheek unconsciously.
The letter was sealed and sent the same day. The pigeon delivering it took less than half the time Liu Mingyan had on the back of her horse, so Shen Qingqiu had it on his desk quite quickly. He didn't get to open it yet when a figure clad in a white and black robe snuck in through the window and stood wordlessly by the desk.
