Considering the situation that had happened on their search for Tianlang-jun, Yue Qingyuan would have preferred not to take a break again. But it didn't take long for the horses to start trotting instead of properly walking. And although they had already been walking a bit slower due to the carriage that was with them.
Since they were close already to where Liu Qingge had left his horse, they decided to take a short break when getting it. What they didn't expect was the shock they would receive when stepping onto the clearing.
Even before they stepped through the bushes, the horses reacted, scratching the ground with their hooves as they nervously blew air through their nostrils. Then the group walked out onto the grass. Immediately they halted.
Luo Binghe was the first to exclaim as he hid his face in Shen Qingqiu's shoulder. Next, Liu Qingge raced to his horse that lay on the ground in a puddle of dried blood.
Weakly the animal raised its head, looking at its master with glossy eyes. With how it had been laying there, one could have thought it was dead already, but of course Liu Qingge's horse was a fighter like him.
"Someone cut his tendons," Liu Qingge hissed angrily, "Instead of just killing him... If I catch that bastard!"
"Perhaps we shouldn't have let them go that easily..." Shen Qingqiu mumbled, his expression hardening.
"Let whom go?" Luo Binghe asked. Carefully he looked out from Shen Qingqiu's arm again. The image he saw had still not changed for the better.
"No one, ch–"
Shen Qingqiu didn't wish for Luo Bunghe to be burdened with something like this, but Liu Qingge did not have the same intention. He was angry.
"The people who followed us all the way from Cang Qiong Mountain into this forest to kill us!" he yelled accusingly, "Because we had to look for you."
Luo Binghe looked at his teacher with big eyes. Shen Qingqiu immediately ruffled the kid's hair. "It's okay, it's not your fault. This master knew this was a possibility when he left the mountain," he assured.
"So someone is looking to kill Shizun and he knew?" Luo Binghe asked.
Shen Qingqiu hesitated before he lastly nodded. "This was not the first time. A couple months ago someone poisoned mine and your shibo's food. After we set off to return home, someone attacked our carriage," Shen Qingqiu explained, "We have made someone angry, someone who has no morals. We will bring him to justice. That is why your father needs to stay on the mountain, so we get to do that."
"That old bastard really has some guts," Tianlang-jun mumbled.
He had gotten to know the two peak lords as two very gentle people, more or less if they weren't yelling or punching him. And they were fair. Tianlang-jun was smart enough to get who they had pissed off simply from the way they always threaded around matters concerning the Palace Master. That man had already committed so many wrongs and now he even hired people to make an attempt at these men's lives.
No wonder Shen Qingqiu had been so unnerved and had even been violent. He must genuinely have been on edge for months. If not already the whole year he had been at this. Looking at him now, the man genuinely looked awfully tired. Judging by what they had said, they had likely not even taken a break on the journey to be safe. And still they had been attacked.
"We expected it when we began stabbing around that nest of wasps. Shall he do what he wants. We know how to protect ourselves. But dragging others into us and even tracking all our horses... The village below the mountain is full of spies and assassins. Even the civilians have noticed," Shen Qingqiu said, "It feels like there is a tension in the air, like if we keep digging, he will start an inferno to burn all of us to the ground."
