Liu Qingge was not really a talkative man. He often kept to himself and if he didn't sit with his sister to speak about this and that, he often just didn't talk for days on end. A quiet man like him, who had the unmistakable aura of a strong fighter was often eyed strangely. Especially when he was hiding in alleyways to trail after his sister and her spouse.
The two of them had only married a week ago. Privately. Despite Liu Wanhua being a future peak lord, somehow Liu Qingge had managed to scare just about every possible attendee of the wedding into remaining away. Except for the two women's friends and their own sect members, there was no one else present.
Not even the sibling's parents.
Liu Qingge wasn't sure if his sister was happy about that or disappointed. Ever since she had started breaking with their family's traditions in her youth, Old Master and Lady Liu had often come to argue with them. To their chagrin, both their children were horribly stubborn.
When they had heard that their daughter was in a relationship with a demon, a female one no less, they had lost it. They had threatened to disown her. Even to completely cross her out of their family tree, like they never even had a daughter.
The day they had gone through with their threat, Liu Qingge had announced that his parents were now dead. They were not, but to him they were. And by losing the favor of their son, they had lost everything. Who would want to associate themselves with people who the war god had declared as dead?
It was not that Liu Qingge was unfeeling or that his parents had no spot in his heart. But they had chosen that he, as the son, had to protect his sister. And no matter what place this request had come from, if it was one of genuine worry or the belief that Liu Wanhua was not strong enough, it did not matter. He had been taught what he had been taught and he was more than comfortable to stand with the family that did not so easily throw away the bonds of blood over a meaningless veil and the other person's happiness.
Maybe Liu Qingge had in fact been raised to be too much of a protector, or it was just that he was the type to become really particular when he had given himself an objective, but he had to find out that apparently not everyone deemed it acceptable to make sure their freshly married off sister had an uneventful vacation with their spouse.
Liu Qingge casually cleaned his sword, occasionally glancing at the tavern Liu Wanhua had gone into to have her lunch. Everything was calm. There were some men who had gone in, but he had deemed them no threat.
When his sister came back out of the tavern, Liu Qingge sheathed his sword again, hanging it by his waist.
Liu Wanhua went to watch an opera with her wife. Liu Qingge sat on a nearby roof, watching the surroundings. After the opera, the woman took Sha Hualing to watch the boats on the nearby river. Liu Qingge was nearby again, a hat woven of bamboo on his head as he pretended to fish, using his sword as the rod.
It's been two days already and Liu Qingge's sister had not yet even noticed her brother nearby. At least he had not yet seen her take note of his presence.
As he lay on the branch of a tree by the house he had rented for them, cotton and bees wax in his ears to plug them while he watched for possible intruders, Liu Qingge spotted a shadow.
The person looked like they were trying to be sneaky, but they were not at all, jumping from one bush to another over a very easily viewable part of the garden. The person was very short. Quite slender too. Clearly only a youth. And, as Liu Qingge could very easily recognize, a male one at that.
Liu Qingge drew his sword.
Normally, he would have just jumped down, beat the kid and then asked him to explain his presence. But this time, something was a bit weird. The guy didn't seem to want to creep to a window. Instead the youth was coming towards the tree he was sitting on.
