It was a perfect day for a baseball game in California. The sun was shining, the air was filled with the excitement of thousands of fans, and Dodger Stadium was buzzing with anticipation. You and your best friend, Junebug, had scored amazing last minute seats right near the field. Both of you were lifelong Dodgers fans, and you couldn’t wait to watch your favorite team in action for the first time.
“This is going to be epic!” Junebug grinned as their tickets were scanned. “I can feel it. I just bet Mookie hits at least two homers today.”
You laughed, adjusting your hat . “You say that every game. But yeah, I think today’s gonna be special.”
The two of you settled into your seats, enjoying the pre-game warmups and the buzz of the crowd after getting food before hand. You was looking around the stadium, soaking in the atmosphere, when you noticed a group of players jogging out onto the field. One player, in particular, caught your eye. His jersey read "Edman," with the number 25 under it and while you automatically knew his name—Tommy Edman—you didn't know much about him other than the fact that he was traded from the Cardinals.
As the players got closer, your heart skipped a beat. Tommy was looking directly in your direction. For a second, you thought you were imagining it, but then it happened—he winked. A sly, confident wink, like he knew exactly what he was doing.
“Oh my God, Y/N. Did you see that?” Junebug's voice was barely above a whisper, her eyes wide with shock.
You turned to your best friend, grabbing her arm. “That—he just winked at me! You saw that to right? I swear I’m not imagining it.”
Junebug looked out toward the field, then back at you. “Well, well, well, Y/N. Looks like Mr. Edman’s got a thing for you. What are you gonna do?”
You blushed, feeling a sudden wave of nerves wash over you. “I don’t know! I mean, he’s a professional baseball player, its not like I know him personally.
Junebug smirked, leaning back in her seat. “Doesn’t matter if you know him or not. He obviously noticed you. And come on, you’re gorgeous—of course he’d wink at you that means something. You should shoot your shot!”
You shook her head, chuckling at the absurdity of the whole situation. “You’re crazy. He probably winks at random girls all the time.”
“Uh-huh. Keep telling yourself that,” Junebug teased. “But just watch. He’s gonna do it again.”
The game started, and you tried to focus on the action, but you thoughts kept drifting back to Tommy Edman. Every time he came up to bat or took the field, she couldn’t help but glance in his direction. And, true to Junebug’s prediction, he kept sneaking glances at you. At one point, while standing on second base after hitting a double, he caught your eye again and smiled.
“He did it again, didn’t he?” Junebug grinned, catching the look on your face.
“Maybe…” You admitted, feeling your cheeks warm up.
By the time the seventh-inning stretch rolled around, You were fully in love. There was something about Tommy’s confidence and that playful wink that had completely won you over.
As the game came to a close, Junebug nudged you. “You should go down to the fence and try to get his attention before he leaves. What have you got to lose?”
You hesitated, feeling a mix of excitement and fear. “I don’t know, Junebug… what if I look stupid or desperate?”
“Who cares? You miss 100% of the chances you don’t take,” Junebug said with a wink of her own.
With your friend’s encouragement, you took a deep breath and made your way down toward the edge of the field where some fans were gathering to try and get autographs. As the players were heading toward the dugout, Tommy spotted you. For a second, you froze, unsure of what to do. But Tommy walked over after signing a bunch of autographs, a smile on his face.
“Hey,” he said, his voice casual but kind. “I noticed you during the game. You a Dodgers fan?”
You smiled nervously, shaking your head. “Yeah, I'm here with my best friend, we've been Dodger fans forever"
Tommy chuckled. “Figures, at least you’ve got good taste in teams.”
“I didn’t expect you to notice me at all,” You admitted, your heart racing.
Tommy leaned in slightly, giving you a playful smile. “It’s hard not to notice someone like you in the crowd.”
You blushed, trying to hide your smile. “You’re just saying that.”
“No, I mean it,” Tommy said, his gaze sincere. “How about I prove it? Are you going to be around after the game?”
You blinked in surprise, your heart skipping a beat. “Uh, yeah… I wasn’t planning on leaving right away.”
Tommy nodded, pulling a small piece of paper from his pocket and scribbling something down. “Here, that’s my number. Maybe we can grab a coffee or something later this week?”
You stared at the paper in disbelief before looking back up at him. “Are you serious?”
“Completely,” Tommy said with another wink. “I’ll be waiting for your text.”
As Tommy walked away, You stood there, clutching the paper in your hand, barely able to process what had just happened. You turned to head back to your seat, where Junebug was waiting, practically bouncing with excitement.
“Well?!” Junebug asked, her eyes wide with anticipation.
You proudly held up the piece of paper with Tommy’s number on it, a grin spreading across her face. “I think I just fell in love.”
Junebug let out a squeal of excitement. “I told you! This is insane! You better text him later!”
You laughed, feeling a rush of excitement and nerves. “I will I promise you. But right now, I need to process the fact that the Tommy Edman just gave me his number.”
The rest of the night flew by in a blur. As you and Junebug made your guys' way out of Dodger Stadium, you couldn’t stop thinking about Tommy. Maybe this was just a chance encounter, or maybe it was something more than you knew.
