You and your boyfriend Yoshinobu, were cozied up on your couch readt to start a movie night in your apartment after he got there from a game and he eagerly showed up set a variety of colorful packages on the coffee table, "what is all this?" You asked staring at everything on the table.
“Alright,” Yoshinobu said, grinning as he arranged everything neatly, my translator came back from Japan and brought me back some snacks, are you ready for the ultimate snack experience?”
You laughed softly, watching him with amusement. “I think I am,” you replied, reaching for one of the snacks. “What should I try first?”
He held up a small bag of potato chips with an unfamiliar flavor. “This is seaweed and salt. It’s simple, but they’re my favorite. You gotta start with the basics,” he insisted, opening the bag and holding it out for you.
You took a chip and popped it into your mouth, savoring the crisp, salty flavor that had a subtle hint of the ocean. “Oh, that’s actually really good,” you said, nodding. “Way better than I expected!”
Yoshinobu chuckled. “Right? People always think seaweed is weird, but it’s really good in snacks.” He grabbed one for himself, munching happily. “Okay, try this one next,” he said, reaching for a small red packet with a cartoon fish on it. “This is taiyaki—it’s filled with chocolate.”
He broke one in half, showing you the sweet chocolate inside. Your eyes widened as you took a bite, enjoying the crispy outside and soft, gooey filling.
“Mmm, this is amazing!” you exclaimed, looking at him with excitement. “You’ve been holding out on me with these all of these snacks!”
He laughed, proud of you reaction. “I knew you’d like it! Japan has the best snacks.” He handed you a drink next, a cute little can with a picture of a peach on it. “This is a peach soda. It’s not too sweet, but it’s super refreshing.”
You took a sip and smiled, the light, fruity taste brightening your taste palate. “Yum, this is amazing, I think this one’s my favorite so far,” you said, taking another sip.
Yoshinobu chuckled and nudged you playfully. “You say that after every snack. But wait, I have something more interesting,” he said, picking up a small pack of rice crackers that had been coated in soy sauce and sugar, giving them a glossy, caramel-like shine. “These are a bit savory and sweet, very traditional.”
You took one and tried it, your expression changing as you tasted the unique combination of flavors. “Wow, I wouldn’t have thought sweet and soy sauce would go together, but this actually works!”
“See? Japanese snacks are on a different level,” he said, looking proud. He then picked up a small package and handed it to you. “Now, this one’s a bit strange, but it’s good—try it with an open mind. It’s umeboshi, or pickled plum, but they’re really sour.”
You eyed the package warily. “Are you trying to trick me?”
“No, no, it’s just a different kind of snack,” he insisted, laughing as he opened the package for you. “Just a small bite.”
You tentatively bit into the umeboshi, your eyes immediately widening at the intense sourness. “Oh my gosh, that’s… really sour!” you said, your face scrunched up.
Yoshinobu burst into laughter. “I told you! It’s an acquired taste.” He grabbed one and ate it without even flinching. “See? No problem.”
“You’re ridiculous,” you teased, still laughing as you shook your head. “But honestly, it’s kind of fun trying all these different snacks with you.”
He smiled, his eyes warm. “I’m glad you like it. It’s like bringing a piece of home to you. I love sharing my culture with you”
You leaned against him, savoring the last of your peach soda. “Well, I love it—and I love that you’re sharing it with me.”
Yoshinobu wrapped an arm around you and pulled her close. “I always want to share everything with you.” The two of you sat quietly for a moment, surrounded by empty packages and snack crumbs, simply enjoying each other’s company.
