It was a late Friday night, and you were pacing back and forth in your apartment, your mind spinning as you thought about what you were about to do. Jack, was finally coming home after a grueling road trip. You’d been holding onto your secret for days, waiting for the perfect moment to tell him. Tonight felt like the night.
Your heart raced as you glanced at the small gift box on the coffee table. Inside was a tiny white onesie with blue lettering that read "Future Dodgers Fan," folded neatly beside a positive pregnancy test. Every time you looked at it, a mix of excitement and nerves bubbled up in your chest. How was Jack going to react? Would he be thrilled? Nervous? Both?
You jumped slightly at the sound of keys jingling outside the door. He was here. Taking a deep breath, you quickly adjusted the box and smoothed your hands over your shirt, trying to appear calm. When the door opened, Jack stepped in, in his team hoodie and sweatpants. His duffle bag hung off one shoulder, and his face lit up the moment he saw you.
"Hey, sweetheart," he greeted, his voice warm and a little tired. He dropped his bag by the door and kicked off his sneakers. "Missed you so much."
You couldn’t help but smile as you walked over to him, wrapping your arms around his neck. He pulled you close, his embrace strong and comforting. You inhaled the familiar scent of his cologne.
"I missed you more," you murmured, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek.
Jack leaned back slightly to study your face, his brows furrowing in concern. "You okay? You seem… I don’t know, on edge or something. What’s going on?"
You laughed nervously, quickly pulling away and gesturing to the couch. "I’m fine! I’m just… excited you’re home. Sit down—I have something for you."
His expression shifted into one of suspicion. "Something for me? Did I miss an anniversary or something?"
"No," you said, rolling your eyes playfully. "Just sit, okay?"
He gave you one last curious look before flopping onto the couch with a sigh, clearly exhausted from his trip. His broad shoulders relaxed as he leaned back, one arm draping over the edge of the sofa. "Alright, let’s see it. What’s this big surprise?"
Your hands trembled slightly as you picked up the box and handed it to him. "Just… open it. And don’t freak out, okay?"
Jack chuckled softly, his curiosity piqued. "You’re making me nervous now, babe." He lifted the lid, revealing the tiny onesie on top. His eyes widened, and he picked it up, holding it between his fingers.
"Awww," he said with a laugh. "This is adorable. Future Dodgers fan, huh? I mean, I already figured our niece or nephew would love the team, but…" His voice trailed off as he noticed the pregnancy test underneath. His hand froze mid-air, and he stared at it, his eyes flickering between the test and you.
"Wait," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Is this…?"
You nodded, your throat tightening with emotion. "Yeah. You’re going to be a dad, Jack."
For a moment, he didn’t move. He just stared at you, his blue eyes wide and glassy. Then, slowly, a grin spread across his face—a grin so bright it made your heart swell.
"You’re serious?" he asked, his voice shaky with disbelief.
"Of course I’m serious," you said, tears beginning to well up in your eyes. "I found out a few days ago and wanted to wait until you were home to tell you."
Jack let out a laugh, one hand running through his hair as he set the box aside and stood up. Before you could react, he pulled you into his arms, holding you tighter than ever. You felt his body tremble slightly, and when he pulled back to look at you, there were tears in his eyes.
