"—truly am..."

All I could do was blink in response to her words. Whatever was in that needle, whatever she injected me with—by the second it felt like it was shutting my body down.

The amount of effort it took just to keep my eyes open was ridiculous.

Even to breathe, to inhale and exhale took everything in me—it took every amount of energy I had in my body.

"—it shouldn't be too much longer now beloved, soon you'll be asleep and your rampant mind will have a rest, don't worry." Eve spoke, as if she was reassuring me.

Like any of this was okay...

With all I had left, I opened my mouth to speak—and despite the effort it took, the only thing that came out was a whisper.

"....why..."

That's it, that's all I had for her...just explain to me why.

I guess the question was for more than just her though—I just couldn't understand why all of this was happening.

She looked down at me with a sympathetic look and then shook her head.

I watch as she began walking over to the cabinets while she spoke, "I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect that question."

with a sigh she began to pull out a bunch of utensils I couldn't see , and then she continued talking.

"—though I think a better one would be...who." She stated.

"Who I am?" She continued.

"—who I was.." she added.

I only stared at her with a glossed-over, exhausted look. I couldn't move, could barely stay awake—and again, even breathing took effort.

"I am a woman." She stated simply.

"A woman who was once a beautiful young lady with a big heart and a beautiful soul." She spoke, all while continuing to prepare whatever it was she was preparing.

"—a woman who wanted nothing more than to be a mother, to share the love I had inside—to show just how big my heart was." She said lowly

Her tone changed after that, it wasn't light and sympathetic anymore. I'm not sure how to put it—but she almost spoke with a hint of anger, or resentment.

"—a woman who at 25 found out she couldn't conceive." She stated, sucking the air from the room.

"—a woman who went on to have miscarriage after miscarriage. A woman who at 30 sat across from her husband as he admitted that he'd had his first child as a product of his infidelity."
