Days passed, and the investigator's progress was slow. The constant waiting and watching wore on Taehyung and Y/N, leaving them both tense and cautious with everyone around them. Every text, every unexpected knock on the door felt like it could be the next move in a game they didn't fully understand.
One evening, Taehyung's best friend, Jihoon, invited them out to a quiet rooftop bar—a place they often went to relax away from the public eye. Taehyung hesitated but, thinking that a night out with someone they trusted might relieve some of the stress, he agreed. Y/N joined him, equally hopeful that the evening could offer them a moment of peace.
As they settled in, the city lights casting a warm glow around them, Jihoon leaned back, a sly smile on his face. "So, how's it been with all the attention lately? It seems you two are the talk of the town."
Taehyung chuckled, though his voice was laced with unease. "You could say that. But honestly, I'd trade all this attention for a quiet life."
Jihoon nodded, taking a sip of his drink. "I don't know. Maybe all this attention is good. Sometimes, fame comes with challenges. And sometimes, challenges reveal... who's really there for you."
Taehyung and Y/N exchanged a glance, a chill settling over them. Something in Jihoon's tone felt off, as if he knew more than he let on. Y/N's mind flashed back to the anonymous messages, the leaked photos, the threats.
Taehyung's voice was tense. "What do you mean by that?"
Jihoon leaned in, his expression turning serious. "You two really think you're untouchable, don't you? That no one else notices the way you act, the secrets you try to keep?"
Taehyung's heart pounded. "Jihoon, what are you saying?"
Jihoon's face twisted into a smirk, one that Taehyung had never seen before. "You've always had it easy, Tae. Everything handed to you—the fame, the fans, the love. But now, you'll see what it's like when someone close to you isn't what they seem."
The realization hit them both like a cold wave. Jihoon had been behind the threats, the leaks... everything. Taehyung's fists clenched, anger simmering beneath the surface.
"You?" Y/N's voice trembled, a mixture of disbelief and hurt. "Why would you do this?"
Jihoon shrugged, unbothered. "Because I'm tired of watching you have everything. I'm tired of being in the background. Maybe I wanted you to know what it feels like to be on the other side."
Taehyung's voice shook with anger. "This isn't you, Jihoon. We trusted you."
Jihoon's smirk faded for a brief moment, a flicker of something like regret passing through his eyes. But it disappeared as quickly as it came. "Trust is just an illusion, Taehyung. And now, I'm finally free of it."
Without another word, he turned and left, leaving Taehyung and Y/N reeling. Their minds raced, trying to process the betrayal of someone they'd considered family.
Y/N looked at Taehyung, placing a hand on his shoulder. "We'll get through this. Together."
Taehyung nodded, feeling both a strange sense of loss and relief. Now they knew who was behind everything, but the pain of betrayal ran deep.
As they walked back to their car, Taehyung's phone buzzed with another message—from Jihoon. It read: "This is far from over. You may know the truth, but let's see if the world will believe you."
A chill ran down their spines. The battle was far from over—and Jihoon had just raised the stakes.
