Brian’s POV
I couldn’t believe this was happening, my mind was going a mile a minute, I was about to run off with the girl that I love who happened to be married to someone else. We got in my dad’s car and started driving.
“Is this really happening?” I asked Mandy.
She smiled. “Yes Brian, this is really happening.”
We sat in silence as I drove; I didn’t really know where we were going, but as Mandy took my hand and said the three words that only meant something to me coming from her. “I love you.” I knew that everything was going to be okay.
“I love you too.” I said softly, before everything went black.
Alisha’s POV
I sat in the living room with Joel waiting to hear anything from Matt or Val, but it seemed like time could not move any slower.
I sat on the floor to play with Robin when the house phone began to ring.
“Hello?” I answered quietly, something just didn’t feel right.
“Hi this is Nancy from Mountainview Hospital, is Alisha Madden available?”
“This is her.”
My heart sunk with the next thing she said. I couldn’t believe what she was saying, it couldn’t be possible.
“Mrs. Madden, we have a Brian Haner and Mandy Hart here and you are listed as one of the emergency contacts. We need you to come down as soon as possible.”
The phone fell from my hand and it felt like the ground was crumbling from underneath me, were we all really destined to always be in so much pain, wasn’t it possible to be happy even for a short amount of time? Joel was at my side and he picked up the phone from the ground while still holding onto me.
I heard a few mumbles before he hung up. He picked me up and set me down at the table. Robin was still sitting on the living room floor playing, while Joel was making calls and bringing our suitcases downstairs.
It seemed like time stood still, but then Alex was at my side with Linzi and Robin was in her arms. Within the next 20 minutes my house was full with suitcases and all the girls were trying to talk to me, but their voices sounded like a distant echo.
All I could think was ‘My sister is dead. I am never going to hear her voice again, her laugh, or sarcastic comments. She’s gone and there’s nothing I can do about it.’ Joel then put his arm around me and helped me into the car, I knew we were heading to the airport, but I still couldn’t wrap my head around the whole situation.
I felt like I should be crying, like the rest of the girls, this was my sister after all, but the tears just wouldn’t fall, I was stuck and it felt like I was frozen and the world was continuing on without me.
Once we walked into the waiting room to see Matt and Val sitting there, things became more real. I waited for the doctor to give us news, but our time sitting here seemed never-ending.
Brian’s POV
I woke up on a stretcher with paramedics surrounding me and the first thing that came to mind was Mandy.
I tried to yell for her, but my voice was muffled and I realized that no one was going to be able to understand me.
I tried to reach out for someone, trying my hardest to get some information about Mandy. Suddenly a young girl, who I assumed was a paramedic, grabbed my hand.
“Sir, you were in a car accident, but we are taking care of you and you are going to be fine.” When she noticed I wasn’t going to calm down, she looked around and then leaned towards.
“Mandy right?” I squeezed her hand and she continued.
“We are doing everything we can, but we need you to calm down so we can take you to the hospital. She is alive and we are helping her in every possible way we can. I promise.”
I relaxed and was put into the ambulance.
Joel’s POV
I couldn’t believe that this was happening. I had tried to call Carey to let him know what was going on but he wouldn’t answer. I imagined by now that he knew Mandy was gone, and he was drowning in his own misery.
Things just could never work out for any of us and it was starting to take its toll on me and everyone else.
I sat in the waiting room for about an hour longer, trying my best to hold it all together for Alisha. Robin was sitting with Zacky and Gena playing on one of their phones, completely oblivious as to why we were all here. This wasn’t a place for her, but it would take another couple hours for Sarah or my mom to get here.
A doctor walked out and Alisha immediately stood up.
Alisha’s POV
“Mrs. Madden?” I walked up to the doctor and he shook my hand, and then gestured for me to sit with him.
“I need you to remain calm and hear me out completely.” I nodded and waited for him to continue.
“Mandy received a minor head contusion that caused a small brain bleed, we are watching it closely and I can assure you that for the moment it is nothing serious for you to be concerned about. What we are concerned about is her kidneys, they have begun to fail. And we don’t know how long she can make it without a transplant.”
“I’ll donate.” I said without hesitating.
He smiled warmly. “That is very generous of you, but we’re not sure if you are even a match.”
I shook my head. “Well let’s find out, test me.”
He began to explain to me what would have to be done and soon my thoughts diverted to Brian.
“How is Brian?”
He hesitated for a moment.
“Brian has lost a lot of blood due to some severe lacerations on his legs and lower abdomen, we transfused once and he seems to have responded well to that. He also took a hard hit to his head when he hit the dash, there seems to not be any permanent neurological damage, but we won’t know more until he wakes up.”
I thanked him and went to let everybody else know what was going on.
Johnny’s POV
I sat quietly with Lacey as Alisha filled us in on what was going on.
This was all my fault.
