Chapter 63 – The Traitor Revealed
The silence in the council chamber had curdled into something unnatural. The kind of silence that comes just before an implosion.
At the head of the table, Zaren Wov stood perfectly still. His eyes glowed faintly—silver light flickering as his Truth-Sight cut through the room.
He spoke at last. "None of them is lying."
Then his gaze narrowed.
"Or rather..."
A pause.
"Perhaps the assassin isn't among them. It could be a rogue hybrid. A Zenips spy."
A thin line of blood slid from Zaren's nose.
He wiped it away quickly.
He had just lied. And his ability punished lies.
Because he already knew something the others didn't.
The assassin's scent was familiar.
A Wolf. From his own kind.
Zaren inhaled slowly and corrected himself.
"...No." His voice hardened. "I can smell the same scent of the assassin in this room."
A chill spread through the chamber.
Leather chairs creaked. Guardians and wolves shifted uneasily. Some stared at Zaren with alarm.
His Eye of Truth had never failed.
Ashel Dom's voice cut through the tension.
"I told you to report everything." His tone was sharp with command. "Yet you hid something this important?"
Zaren clenched his fists. His chest tightened painfully.
Even a simple reprimand from Ashel felt like a blade twisting under his ribs.
He said nothing.
Instead, he turned his gaze slowly across the chamber, forcing his power to activate again.
Truth-Sight flared brighter.
Auras bled into existence.
Cienna Verra — crimson flickers of restless intellect.
Marie Duke — luminous gold, the signature glow of hybrid royalty.
Soria — ancient violet currents of old Zenips blood.
Face after face.
Aura after aura.
Truth.
Truth.
Truth.
Still no deception.
Zaren's jaw tightened.
He could smell the assassin. But he could not see the lie.
Then—
Clap.
A slow, mocking applause echoed through the chamber.
"Bravo."
Athena's voice floated through the silence, sweet with sarcasm.
Her gloved hands clapped lazily.
"Zaren agonizing over invisible lies."
She tilted her head.
"Truly tragic. I almost wept."
The room froze.
Her voice dropped lower. "But you forgot one thing."
Her fingers reached up and removed the black veil from her face with delicate grace.
