Chapter 87 — Literature Puzzle Race + Island Science Workshop
Wayne Academy Silver Island Field Trip — Day 2
Morning sunlight spilled through the cabin window like a spotlight, golden and unforgiving.
Miexha was alone. Quietly making all four beds.
Her roommates' laughter echoed faintly from the dining hall.
Jayson's voice lingered in her mind from the night before.
"You're not a servant, Miexha."
Her hands stilled for a second. Then continued smoothing the sheets.
"But if I just do it... maybe things won't get worse."
Clarise had slapped her earlier.
Miexha hadn't fought back. Hadn't even spoken to defend herself.
She had just stood there, blinking, one hand pressed to her cheek—
Trying to understand what she did wrong.
Now, the faint red mark pulsed beneath her skin.
A quiet, throbbing secret. One she didn't want Jayson to see.
"If he finds out... he'll explode again."
And she didn't think she could survive another scene like last night.
She finished the beds.
Slipped out. Arrived late for breakfast.
Minus points. Section 8 dropped further behind.
Snickers followed her like shadows.
Her section didn't even try to hide it.
"Thanks for that, lucky charm."
"Late again?"
"You think being fragile makes you special?"
"Now you're our leader too?"
They pointed her to a lone seat at the back of the hall.
The staff was already gone. No one helped her to carry her food.
The tray was heavy—stacked with food meant for someone with a bigger appetite.
Miexha lifted it carefully. Arms trembling slightly.
She walked. Slowly and carefully, so as not to drop it.
Pretending she didn't feel the stares. Pretending she didn't hear the whispers.
Pretending—
The weight suddenly disappeared.
Jayson had taken the tray from her. Effortless.
His jaw clenched.
Zatariel stood. He stepped beside her and guided her forward—one hand hovering near her back, not touching.
Through the noise.
Through the stares.
Straight to their table.
Asha was already there, slumped over her seat.
"Tell the blonde ghost to sing softer..." she mumbled. "I have a headache..."
And just like that, the four of them sat together.
The dining hall erupted.
"She's so lucky—Jayson's the perfect fiancé."
"He even carried her tray?"
"SC pres escorted her? Since when?"
"She's faking it. That weak act? Totally planned."
