Chapter 44
Miexha's POV
I was about to lie down when I heard a knock.
Soft. Three gentle taps.
I had just finished brushing my hair and was hugging one of the bunny plushies Asha had left on the bed when the door creaked open.
Jayson stepped inside.
He was wearing a simple black shirt and soft gray pajamas. He looked more like a very tall, slightly awkward boy who didn't quite know what to do with his hands.
Then he quietly locked the door behind him.
His eyes slowly swept across the room. "It's... aggressively pink."
I smiled.
He walked toward the bed and sat stiffly at the edge without asking.
I sat beside him.
For a moment, we just sat in silence. It wasn't uncomfortable.
Just... new.
He cleared his throat.
"Mom said to come here to check on you," he said.
"I see," I replied softly. "So this is... a political visit?"
A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Kind of. But also... I wanted to get close to you."
"That part sounds less presidential."
His eyes flicked toward mine.
Then, he reached out and took my hand.
His palm was warm. His fingers were careful—like he wasn't used to touching something fragile.
We both stared at our hands as they belonged to someone else.
"I've never... done this kind of thing before," he muttered.
I looked up at him.
"They're going to expect us to look like we care about each other," he said. "So maybe... we should practice a little."
My heart panicked.
Not butterflies. More like a whole zoo stampeding through my ribs.
"You mean... hold hands?" I asked.
"We're already doing that," he said.
Then he hesitated. "I meant... maybe... a kiss?"
"A kiss," I repeated quietly. "Like... a real one?"
He immediately looked horrified.
"No! I mean—not like—! Just... maybe... something small."
I nodded too quickly. We were both blushing and blinking too much.
"Okay," I squeaked. "Let's try..."
We leaned forward at the same time—
—and bonked our foreheads.
"Ow!" I giggled into my sleeve.
"Sorry! Sorry!" He rubbed his head, laughing under his breath.
"Let's... try again," he said.
This time, we were more careful. We tilted our heads slightly.
Then— Our lips touched.
Just for a moment.
We both pulled back instantly.
Eyes wide. Faces burning.
"Okay," he said.
