THE WEEKS FOLLOWING XANDER'S LEAVING HAD BEEN HARD FOR HAYLEY. After Charlie had found her crying on her bedroom floor, he discovered that Bella wasn't in the house with her twin. So, as he gathered a search party to find his youngest daughter, the chief of police had left his daughter with Leah Clearwater. The older girl had stayed with her that night, brushing her hair from her face and trying to distract her from everything. And while Hayley appreciated the gesture, it didn't help as much as Leah had hoped it would.
It was only when Charlie carried a shivering Bella into the house that Hayley moved from her spot on the couch. She reached her hands up for her sister, much like a child would urge for a stuffed animal, and wrapped Bella in an embrace as she cuddled her on the couch. It was a tight fit, but Hayley made it work, holding her twin close to her as the two girls settled into a sullen silence.
