HAYLEY HAD KEPT HERSELF LOCKED AWAY IN THE ROOM THAT DAY AFTER THE CRASH. While Bella wanted to find out more about the Cullens, her sister wanted to avoid people at all costs. She didn't want the pitying looks or constantly getting asked if she was okay. Charlie had agreed to let her stay home, knowing the event rattled his older daughter more than the younger.
And so there she lay, curled up in a blanket cocoon and hiding away from the world around her. Every time she closed her eyes, she could still see the va,n and she felt so powerless to stop it. But then a thought popped into her head.

At first, Hayley was thankful for the moody boy she had come to dislike. Now, though, she couldn't stop the questions from swarming in her mind. Now she understood why Bella had stopped to question the boy before they left the hospital. And she had questions of her own.
