"Hey, I suggest you move further down the bridge. It's a lot higher there, and there are fewer people."
Mingyu is snapped out of his thoughts by the sudden voice right beside him. His tear-streaked face doesn't seem to faze the stranger, who calmly gazes over the bridge that night. The stranger doesn't appear alarmed at all by the fact that Mingyu has somehow ended up over the railing, now at the very edge, holding onto the bars with his back pressed against them.
"At this height, you're just going to end up with a few broken bones, man. That'll hurt a lot more, I'm telling you that right now."
The stranger spoke casually, as if this situation was something he'd seen before—maybe even many times in the past. His calmness shocked Mingyu, though he himself was in a bizarre and dangerous situation. It was totally surprising, yet the pale man beside him remained unfazed, casually sipping on his hot chocolate.
Mingyu's eyes followed the stranger's gaze. The city's night skyline reflected beautifully on the dark river ahead of them. Mingyu could hear the river whooshing beneath him. The cool night breeze and the height of where he was standing suddenly made him feel nauseous.
Just moments ago, he had been so ready to jump.
But after hearing what the man said... he wasn't so sure anymore.
"You're saying I'll still survive from this height?" Mingyu asked, his voice trembling from both exhaustion and, of course, fear.
"Yeah, totally. I've seen some people survive after jumping from this spot. You should try the one further down, a couple of streetlights from here."
Suggesting the perfect spot to jump to your death was something Mingyu didn't expect to hear that night. Then again, he hadn't exactly been expecting to end it all that night either.
Maybe this was a sign from the universe, telling him he was somehow heading in the right direction.
"Alright then," Mingyu nods. He says he wants to jump, but the pale fingers gripping tightly onto the railing tell a different story.
"Well, you could always just shuffle to the side from where you're standing, or you could come back here and walk over there. You know, make things quicker."
The stranger then crumples his now-empty cup and shoves it into his pocket. His empty right hand extends to Mingyu, offering to help him back onto the bridge. Mingyu carefully takes it, his cold body stiffly turning around, gripping the stranger's hand, and pulling himself over the railing back into the walking area of the bridge.
With great effort, the man pulls Mingyu over, stumbling back and causing Mingyu to lose his balance. He falls onto the man's chest.
"Oops, sorry, I lost my balance. Let me—"
Mingyu's eyes widen as he feels a tight embrace around his entire body, over his shoulders and around his back. He looks up at the man's face, confused not only by the sudden, very tight hug but also by the expression he's wearing.
A second ago, he looked calm. Stoic. Like he couldn't even be bothered at all.
And now, standing right before Mingyu, was a man who looked panicked, scared, and very much worried.
"The hell were you doing, mate?!"
"Huh?" Mingyu swallows hard, the sudden rise in the stranger's voice adding to his disoriented state.
"Don't 'huh' me. Were you seriously trying to off yourself? Dude, I don't know you, and I probably don't have any right to say this, but please—think this through, okay? I'm sure you'll be able to get past whatever problem you're facing right now."
