"People these days, am I right?"
Mingyu comments, watching a gay couple on the other side of the street from the café where he's sitting. He silently nods at the man sitting across from him, who had joined him moments ago, as there's nowhere else to sit in the crowded café.
The man glances at where Mingyu is staring, his eyes flickering between the sweet couple and the bitter single man sitting right in front of him.
"Don't they care about the people around them?" Mingyu says, gesturing toward the couple. "I mean, look at that granny over there. She looks uncomfortable as hell with those two just kissing in broad daylight."
The man silently watches as Mingyu continues to babble on about the happy couple. Mingyu's lips press into a tight line as he swallows the swig of coffee in his mouth.
"I get that people are more open about relationships like that, but at least have the decency to show a little restraint, you know?" Mingyu adds.
Mingyu shakes his head as he watches the couple finally stand up from the bench and walk away, disappearing from sight. He turns to face the stranger he's been sitting with, feeling a bit embarrassed as he realizes he's been rambling on about his own thoughts—thoughts that, upon reflection, might have been a bit insensitive.
"Oh, sorry. I must've been annoying you this whole time. I was just voicing my thoughts." Mingyu says, tapping his fingers around his mug, its warmth seeping into his palms.
"Don't be." the man replies. "People can have their own opinions. Who am I to tell you how to think, right?"
Anyone could tell there was something more beneath the words the man had just said. Mingyu couldn't help but feel conflicted. The man had agreed with him, but the way he said it made it seem as if he was implying something about Mingyu's comments on the gay couple—perhaps even disagreeing with how Mingyu had talked and acted.
"Uhh, I shouldn't have really said that. I guess I'm just having a bad day... and I took it out on those two."
"You seriously don't have to explain yourself to me. I honestly couldn't care less."
Hearing him say that only made Mingyu want to explain himself more. He tried to ignore the sigh the man let out, though a part of him just wanted to slap himself in the face to stop annoying this poor stranger, who was clearly just there for the coffee.
"I just didn't want you to think I have ill intentions toward people like them, you know?"
The man's face finally broke into a smile—slightly sinister, Mingyu thought. The stranger then pushed his cup aside, planting his elbows on the table as he leaned in toward Mingyu's side.
"Has anyone ever told you you're talkative?"
Mingyu could only blink, heat creeping up from his neck to his cheeks.
He nodded, avoiding the stranger's intimidating yet playful gaze. His head wanted to look away, but strangely, he couldn't.
"So you do know. Do you also know that you're being pretty defensive right now?"
Mingyu's eyes widened, his mouth agape in confusion. He had no idea what the man could be talking about.
"What do you mean?"
The stranger narrowed his eyes at Mingyu, his dark pupils scanning his face carefully as Mingyu sat there, still a bit stupefied.
"Hmm, I guess you don't even know yourself."
The man leaned back into his relaxed position, pulling the cup back to its original place. He took a slow sip, set it down, and then focused on Mingyu again, who had been following his every move.
