Chapter 29 - A New Life

"Katie! Hurry up we're gonna be late!"

"I'm coming, hold on! Just two seconds!"

A minute later, Katie came out of her room. She smiled as Ethan gave her a small hug and told her she looked beautiful. She held onto his hand as they left their flat to head to the cinema.

The couple sat in their seats, watching Insidious 3. Katie was absorbed into the film, stuffing her face with popcorn and jumping a little whenever something scary happened.

Ethan looked around the room, just in front of him were the seats him and Simon sat in on their first date. He remembered images of that special date Simon made with the Nando's and home videos of them and the Sidemen. He smiled with tears in his eyes, they were beautiful moments in his life, but the love he had for Simon had been destroyed. The dark images of the fights and arguments surrounded him and memories of that horrible night came back to him. His relationship with Simon was doomed from the beginning.

But Ethan had moved on. He told his parents he wanted to start fresh. Be straight and independent, and that's what he did. He got a flat, a car, an independent life and a girlfriend. He left his old life behind. It had taken a while to achieve all this but after a few months of hard work and devotion, he earned it.

Ethan looked at his girlfriend who was hiding behind her popcorn, he chuckled as he took the popcorn from her and wrapped his arm around her. She leaned on his chest, hiding slightly as she continued watching the film. She was an amazing person and she made Ethan happy. She was the person that helped him recover from what happened with Simon.

He had known Katie before as a friend but they hardly met each other, they had texted each other sometimes and had met up a few times. After Ethan chose to change, he decided to bring the friends that didn't know about him closer, and forget the friends that knew him well.

Katie's presence alone cheered him up, she helped him without knowing what happened. She cheered him up when he was down and helped him move into his apartment and adjust. Soon enough, she had fallen in love with him and told Ethan who accepted her love. He had a mutual feeling too, but it was nowhere near as strong as the feelings he had for Simon. But Simon was the past and Katie was the present.

Ethan hadn't told her about his past, but he left the past behind - like it should be. He wanted to forget about it, to think it never happened. He wanted to pretend he was never gay, that he was straight his whole life. But deep inside, the secret was there, the relationship was there and the love and pain he experienced in that relationship were there. He had a girlfriend, yes. But he was still gay.

The love he had for Katie was as a friend, but he forced himself to love her as a partner. He would ignore the voice in his head telling him he was gay and would talk to himself about how he was straight and loved Katie. So he was straight. He loved Katie. And Katie loved him.
