Chapter 36 - Trying

Ethan woke up to his phone ringing. He looked to his side to see Katie had already gotten up. Rubbing his eyes, he reached out for his phone and answered it, mumbling, "hello?"

"Ethan?" Ethan widened his eyes in shock. He froze as he heard Simon's voice.

"Ethan? Are you there?" Simon asked, sounding concerned. Ethan didn't reply.

"Ethan, please say something." Simon pleaded. Ethan thought for a while before finally replying. "What do you want?" He couldn't bear to say Simon's name and he was afraid that if he spoke he would burst into tears.

"Ethan, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, for everything. I was stupid and angry, and... I was ashamed of who I was, of what we were. I loved you but my ego got the better of me. I'm sorry for everything I did, it was wrong. I regret it so much. Losing you made me lose myself, I don't know who I am anymore, I'm lost. Please, please come back."

Ethan had silent tears falling down his face. "I don't want anything to do with you. Please leave me alone." He whispered before hanging up. He sat in bed wiping away his tears before getting up and going to the bathroom.

As he brushed his teeth and looked into the mirror, he remembered everything that happened. From the fights with JJ to the day he hurt himself. It was pathetic. Ethan felt weak for letting himself go through it all, he was blinded with love. But Simon was long gone and now he had Katie.

As he left the bathroom he heard his phone ringing again. He walked over to it and looked at the caller ID - it was Vikk. He answered it, he didn't have anymore feelings. If it was Simon he would hang up. If it was Vikk he would have small talk. He had a heavy heart, it wouldn't shatter like the millions of times before, he was stronger.

"Hello." He mumbled, clenching his jaw.

"Ethan please. I miss you, so much." Simon's voice was broken and he was crying.

Ethan got ready to hang up but just as he was about to move the phone away from his ears, Simon cried, "I still love you Ethan. I always will." Ethan froze and listened as Simon sobbed. "Please, if you don't want to be like how we were then don't. But please, just talk to me. Be my friend. I need you."

Ethan remained silent, listening to Simon cry. It hurt him to hear him cry, but nothing could be done about it. Their relationship didn't work, and it was time to let it go. "I'm sorry Simon. But what we had is over. I don't want to be reminded of it, and being connected to you in anyway will only hurt me. Just please leave me alone." He quietly said before hanging up. He felt horrible for what he had done, but if he reconnected with Simon again he would only be hurt again. He didn't want to go through everything again, he was tired of it.

He put his phone on silent and left it on the bed before walking out of the room. He went into the kitchen where Katie was making breakfast. "Hey babe." Katie smiled as Ethan stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her. "Hey." Ethan smiled back as he kissed her cheek.
He forced himself to forget what had just happened and get on with life. Simon wanted him back, but he didn't want to go back. He was over Simon, he had moved on. He had forgotten everything he had with Simon and moved on to make a new life, a life he enjoyed with a beautiful, loving girl. Simon was the past, and Katie was the present.
