Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico
Several men were gathered in a luxurious estate near the beach. Some were Mexican, while others appeared to be foreign; leading the latter was Árpád Fenyvesi, who spoke perfect Spanish to the Mexicans.
-... and that's the current situation.
-Mr. Fenyvesi, my associates and I appreciate you coming all this way, but this is something we can't get involved in... or rather, it's not in our interest. You know? Many of us believe you should stay over in Europe and let us Mexicans handle this matter. I mean, in the City, there are Italians, Georgians, Bulgarians, Russians, Romanians, Nigerians, Serbs, Turks... when would we have imagined being pushed out of our own country? If that witch messed up with her partners and they found a way to leave us something, well, good riddance, right?
-You might be right, but I see an opportunity here: as you know, once the war over there ends, the cartels will... how do you say in Spanish? Ah! "A darse la madre" And you'll have to choose a side when you could... I don't know... strengthen yourselves even more after this.
-I must say that many of us agree it's unsustainable for so many foreigners to be involved in our country. Eventually, we'll sort things out with the other cartels. It's nothing we aren't used to. This has been going on for decades; if not over a century. We know the nature of our business.
-Yes, but wouldn't it be better to ease the business, even if just for a while? What would you think if you were the ones to set the rules of the new game once this is all over?
-Are you trying to take us for a ride?
-Think of the two major Mexican cartels of all time: they pushed out of the business the Colombians and became so powerful that they even reached Europe, making us work for them. What happened? Their internal fights and the fact that fresh blood got old while new European blood came in caused them to be displaced. Moreover, we learned it was better to ally for the sake of business, something you never learned.
-Watch your tongue, Don Árpád. That might be the last thing you say.
-Will you risk your skin for someone from Sinaloa, Jalisco, Guanajuato, or Tamaulipas?
The man who said that to the Hungarian fell silent.
-I'm just showing you the opportunity. Again, the two major cartels were pushed out of the Balkans by us, from the Netherlands by the Moluccans and by the Dutch Penose, and they were even pushed out of Spain by Moroccans, Romanians, and Galicians. Who would have thought that their lack of cohesion would revive the Galician clans? –Fenyvesi scoffed-. Plus, those people in the City are willing to set aside certain pieces of the pie for other foreign friends instead of you.
-You almost convince me, but won't that give you the door to control the business not just over there in ****, but also in Mexico?
-We have nothing else to do here but support our business representative. But once this is all over, you will not only have a "seat" in the new order to come, but you'll also have a vote in the City, where there's plenty of money for you.
-So what do you want here?
-We want certain members of our family back, and if one of them comes out... let's say, not looking too good, we want the names of those responsible.
-We are not responsible of that.
-I know, and that's why I'm turning to you, because you can come out victorious. It's like in that phase of the War on Drugs: you destroyed those who seemed invincible at the East, but the West grew stronger. This is cyclical; we know that too. And it's time for the wheel to turn again –Árpád negotiates.
