"Follow me." Sue says without being asked. She knew we would ask anyway. We all follow her into the lounge room with the TV in it. I didn't question or tease when Brent grabs my hand in his. I smile at him comfortingly as we both sit down together and all the boys follow our lead.
Tom is sitting in the room as well. He has a expression mixed with anger and fear. I choked back a sob, I knew what this would be about. But I had to stay strong for Brent. Sue walks over to the TV and turns it on as she grabs the remote. She flicks it to a recording showing a news Chanel.
Dread fills me. The note. They would have found out more about that. As the anchor turns and faces the camera she has a grim expression in her face. "Today investigators have been able decipher more of the note we shared with you yesterday." She flips her pages and looks grimly at the paper before turning back to us again.
I squeeze Brent's hand and he pecks me on the forehead. I guess the situation can't really get to much worse. "After he threatens to come for the son he continues," she picks up another sheet of paper as she sighs heavily. "I know where you are. I am out for you. I know the people who mean the most to you. If I can't get to you, I will get to them." I feel a drop of water on my hand and look up to see it slipped from Brent's eye.
"In fact I'm out to get them so you can watch them die. Then I will kill you. Painfully. There will be no hiding. No running." I take in a shaky breath. He knows where Brent is. Just as I thought it couldn't get worse. I was wrong.
"The note ends there after it is signed by the father." She looks up and I swear I see tears in her eyes. I didn't blame her though. I feel the tears coming. "We will keep you updated on the news the police find of the man. He will be left confidential but again be warned. He's out and out to kill." With that sue turned of the TV angrily as she threw the remote across the room. Again, I didn't blame her.
"Just as I thought it couldn't get any worse." Bailey stated for all of us. We sat in silence for a while and I kept holding Brent's hand. I didn't plan to ever let go. But Brent must have thought otherwise as he stood up and paced the floor in front of us. I was worried he might wear down the carpet and then fall through the the floor. Just as I was going to tell him to slow down he stopped in his tracks.
He then sighs loudly letting out his irritation. "We'll call the police soon." Tom says quietly, hardly loud enough for us to hear.
"What good are they though." Leo says irritated. I agree with him fully. They haven't done anything yet, why would they be any help now. If they hadn't found him yet there was no hope.
"Their our only hope though." Kyle says quietly. There's tears streaming down his face. These boys are all so close its touching. The thought of each other in danger sends each other to tears. Surely there's something, anything we could do to keep Brent safe. If his dad knew where he is then why not just change that. Move Brent.
"I have an idea!" I say excitedly as I stand to my feet. Tom and sue look at me curiously. I take that as a maybe you should tell us the idea.
"Why don't we just move Brent." I tell them. "If he thinks he's here, which he is, then let's move him away." A smile creeps to my lips. It's a fool proof plan. If we just move Brent away for a little while until the police find his dad, he's safe. And that was all I wanted. What we all wanted.
"It's a great idea." Tom says with a small smile but I can hear the doubt in his voice.
"What?" I ask.
"It's just," Tom sighs, "if he already knows where he is why wouldn't he just be able to follow." Tom looks up at me and I see all the worry in his eyes. This is his son. Well it isn't really his son but I think you get me.
"We have to try." I say desperately.
"We can't just wait until he rocks up ready to murder me." Brent says as he steps into the conversation. There's a determined expression on his face.
"He won't be murdering you." Sue says with finality. The boys all nod in agreement and I agree too.
"Well then what do you suppose we do about that?" Brent asks. "He said in that letter that he's out for who I love," Brent says hurt as he looks at me, "I'm not leaving you behind." He steps closer to me and wraps his arms around me. I dig my head into his warm chest, hearing his heartbeat is music to my ears. An endless song I didn't want to end.
"I'm gonna be fine." I tell him as I pull away from him.
He shakes his head. "If I'm going into hiding your coming with me." He says it so forcefully I nearly say yes.
"Brent no I'll be fine." I place my and on his shoulder comfortingly but I can tell he's just ignored what I just said.
"So then I guess that the plan," Sue says as she heads to pick up the phone, "we are hiding Brent in the most remote place on earth."
