They sit now at the edge of Nancy's bed as she runs her hands through a new cloud of light.
Dustin's bright idea.
His excited laugh echoes through each of them, filling them with warmth.
"Okay, try it now," he orders, unplugging the machine in the real world.
Angie grins, leaning into it.
"Hi," she writes.
"That worked!" he shouts from the other side.
Chaos of excitement ensues-- hugging and laughing.
They were gonna make it home.
Nancy steps up next, spelling it out for them.
"S.T.U.C.K."
"Can you guy's not get back through Watergate?" Dustin asks.
Steve's brows furrow.
"What the hell is Watergate?" he asks.
Robin cocks her head in assumption, "Because it's in water and it's a gate."
Eddie scoffs, "Oh, that's cute,"
"It's a play on words," Angie grins, recalling the Nixon scandal.
Eddie turns to her, his gaze sarcastic.
"You're such a nerd," he mumbles.
She playfully shoves him as Nancy continues.
"G.U.A.R.D.E.D."
"Okay, we think we have a theory that can help with that!" Dustin announces, earning a few whispers of praise, "We think Watergate isn't the only gate. That there's a gate at every murder site."
Nancy stops, "Does anybody understand what he's talking about?"
They all shake their heads, trying to think.
"?"
"Okay, seriously?" Dustin scoffs, his voice raising, "How many times do I have to be right on the money before you guys just trust me?"
"Jesus Christ," Steve mutters, shaking his head, "This kid's gotta get his ego in check."
Eddie leans forward in agreement, "It's his tone. Right?"
"Both of you be nice," Angie whispers, cutting them off, "I know where we need to go next."
"What? Where?"
She turns to her brother, "Home. But, it's seven miles from here."
"Nancy?" Robin calls, looking through the crowd, "Uh, I know your house here is, like, weirdly, creepily frozen in time and shit, but haven't you always had bikes?"
"Yeah," she smiles, "in the garage-- come on."
They dart through the house, not wasting any time.
The other kids were already headed to the trailer, and they did not want to stay down there any longer than they had to.
When they arrive, Robin chuckles, out of breath.
"That's gotta be a Guinness World Record," she says, "Most miles traveled inter-dimensionally."
Steve coughs, following the crowd in the door, "I just inhaled a bunch of that crap... It's stuck in my throat."
"Goddamn," Angie whispers, looking up at the gate in the ceiling.
Darkness had more than engulfed her childhood home.
Eddie clears his throat, trying to keep his emotions in check.
