Niall's POV

"Did you, or did you not, date Dominique after I won the Voice-Off?" Skylar asked. There was absolutely no emotion in her voice.

"What?" I squawked, surprise and shock in mine. "Where would you ever think that?"

"It doesn't matter," she said tonelessly. "Answer the question, Niall."

"I never did," I said honestly. "She dragged me out to the movies the week after you'd won, but nothing happened. It wasn't even a date, it was more of a kidnapping. Except that I was allowed to go home afterwards."

She was silent. 

"It wasn't a date. I never dated her," I insisted.

"I believe you," she said finally. "But why didn't you tell me?"

"I was scared you would think otherwise," I admitted. "And it kind of slipped my mind, with all the X-Factor preparations. But why ask me now?"

"Because someone told me you'd dated her, and I wanted to know if it was true. Because it was news to me."

"But who?" I asked.

I could practically hear her swallow on the other end. "Doesn't matter now. I'll see you around."

"Skylar, wait!" I said.

"What?"

"Were you in Texas?" I asked. "With Louis and Eleanor and Ed in the theatre."

"What makes you think that?" she asked.

"The photo that got leaked on Twitter," I said.

"The photo was obviously photoshopped," she said.

"But it didn't look it," I insisted. "I looked closely enough, you all had worried expressions on your faces, and the lines were seamless. It looked as if someone had actually caught you."

"Well it never happened," she said, but there was a hint of desperation in her voice, as if she was lying.

"Skylar, when did we start hiding things from each other?" I asked.

She laughed bitterly. "When you cheated on me."

"I thought we were over that," I said, heat rushing to my face.

"We are, but you asked," she replied.

"Skylar, I'm sorry," I said desperately.

"I know you are, but I'm not ready for forgiveness. Not yet." With that, she was gone.

I set the phone down and stared blankly at the wall. I'd screwed up. I'd screwed with her best friend behind her back. I had no idea whether things would be the same any longer.

"Niall?" Liam asked softly from the door.

"Yeah?" I asked sighing.

"We're going for dinner. Want to come?" he asked.

"Sure." I stood up.

"I'm sorry about earlier," Liam mumbled as we headed down the stairs.

"It's fine," I said sadly. "You were right."
