Lan Zhan can't hide his glare when XiChen delivers the news: Jiang YanLi wants to meet with Wei Ying. If it was up to him, he would say no, and that would be the end of that. But it isn't his choice to make.
"You don't have to say anything now, A-Ying," the traitor says with a kind smile. "It's nearly curfew, and she can wait. But I must say, I was surprised by her decision. She wants to go back to Lotus Pier and take over the leadership temporarily until her brother recovers. Quite daring, in light of the misogyny female cultivators have to endure. She asked me for tips and pointers."
"Wow, good for her." Wei Ying reaches for Lan Zhan's hand under the table. If XiChen-Ge wasn't here, they'd be a lot closer. He smiles to himself because who knew Lan Zhan liked cuddling? It's the most adorable part of him, and Wei Ying thanks his lucky stars again since he loves to snuggle up to his fiance. He can hardly believe that they're going to get married. Old Man Lan would and should have been their biggest obstacle, but he's shockingly on their side.
"I'll see you both tomorrow, then," XiChen smiles at both of them and leaves.
Wei Ying pushes the table out of the way at the same time that Lan Zhan's long fingers wrap around his waist and lifts him into his lap. They both let out a sigh of contentment.
"Much better," Wei Ying says and kisses him under his jaw before resting his cheek on Lan Zhan's strong shoulder.
"Mn."
"What do you think about ShiJie wanting to see me?"
"A leopard never changes its spots."
Wei Ying giggles. "Yeah...I don't know why, but I'm not convinced that she's had a change of heart. Seeing is believing, you know? A person is usually too set in their ways to change that."
"Mn. Does Wei Ying want me there if you decide to meet her?"
"Yeah, if you're not too busy."
"Wei Ying is more important to me. Even if there was a prearranged task, it would be delayed in favour of being with Wei Ying." Lan Zhan kisses the top of his head.
"The thing is," Wei Ying muses, closing his eyes because Lan Zhan is too comfortable and warm and strong, ticking all of his internal boxes, "We were close. I do love her as my sister, and I know she loves me. That's another thing Jiang Cheng was jealous about. His insecurity made him think I was taking away both his father and his sister."
"That would have left him with just Yu-Furen. It is understandable that he felt short-shrifted."
Wei Ying throws back his head and cackles. "No one believes me when I say you're funny!"
"The problem with the Jiang family is that they think of people as commodities. It was Jiang YanLi's responsibility to inform Jiang WanYin of this, that the people in the Jiang Clan are individuals, not trade items. The parents were also at fault for neglecting their duty, but after they were gone, your sister should have realised that her youngest brother was teetering on the edge of his own destruction. It's even possible that she knew it and still stood by to do nothing."
"Whatever. I feel so far removed from anything happening in Lotus Pier now. I guess them both telling me that I was coming here, without actually asking me, sealed our fates. I don't wanna go back to a place where I'm not valued for myself, only for what I can do. And honestly? It's hella tiring smoothing ruffled feathers because Jiang Cheng has gotten himself in a snit. I'm done making excuses for them."
"Has Wei Ying made any decisions about us?"
"Other than getting married? Not really," he shakes his head.
