Dear Beautiful Readers,

Just a quick note to warn you that if you really like Jiang Cheng, then maybe skip this story. It's a Golden Core reveal request by @Purple_star04 and it takes place after Wen Ning has been brought back from the dead.

It's definitely not as fluffy as my usual stuff, but I've added lots of happy WangXian at the end to make up for the trauma in the start. The POV will be Jiang Cheng, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying to explain things better and I hope you like it. Also, the part about wrangling a wet cat comes from @fyredancer, all credit to them for making me laugh because they said writing WangXian is exactly like that and they've done both.

Please let's not have a fight in the comments section defending Jiang Cheng. This story features the novel version of him and he did do some questionable things, but as I've said above, if you don't agree then skip this story and look after yourself.

Thank you for your understanding and please remember that we're all here for the entertainment and to have a good time.

All my love,

Charlie.

A Double Edged Sword

The latest letter from Lanling burns under his purple robes close to his chest as Jiang Cheng orders a ginger tea at an inn in Yiling. Jin Guangshan is becoming more daring by the day, hiding behind his smartest bastard son to send him covert threats. They're always dripping in sugary syrup words supposed to sound supportive, but Jiang Cheng has learned the art of reading between the lines. He knows that when people like Jin Guangshan say things like, “cause for concern”, and “measures should be taken”, he's really saying, “if you can't control your head disciple, what kind of a sect leader are you?” and “if you don't do something, we will”.

His own Jiang disciples don't know why they've returned to this shitty town in the middle of nowhere, under the grim shadows of the Burial Mounds, but it's only a matter of time before word spreads that his stupid Shixiong, Wei WuXian, has done the unthinkable.

Wei WuXian has never taken the easy way out of any situation. Always dancing along the thin line between pushing too much and retreating way past the time to do it, Jiang Cheng is doubly annoyed at himself for thinking that this time might be different. This time, he will be able to change the direction of Wei WuXian's path. Perhaps steer him into safer waters.

Weeks ago when Jiang Cheng had come here to get an account of Wei WuXian's actions, Wen Qionglin, Wen Ning, had still been unconscious. Dead in all the ways that mattered. Now, if what Jin Guangshan says is correct, then Wen Ning is dead but somehow retained his conscience. It sounds impossible. And that's exactly why Jiang Cheng must check because in the history of the YunmengJiang sect, no one has tried to push the boundaries of their motto; of Attempting the impossible as much as Wei WuXian.

Jiang Cheng’s patience is already quite thin.

Understandably, he thinks, with no small amount of irritation. Wei WuXian has finally bitten off more than he can chew and this time, no one is going to save him. The Jiang Sect have spread the news of his defection; at this reminder, Jiang Cheng forces his blush to disappear because he had announced in a packed hall filled with sect leaders big and small, that Wei WuXian was now the enemy of the Cultivation World. He hadn't realised what kind of reaction those words would trigger.

Maybe this time, Wei WuXian will learn his lesson, give up the filthy Wens and finally remember his real family, the one that took him in from the streets and fed him, put a roof over his head and taught him everything he knows. The one he's abandoning by stubbornly sticking his nose in someone else's business. The Wen Remnants are not YunmengJiang’s problem. As far as Jiang Cheng is concerned, it doesn't matter what happens to them. Jin Guangshan has already offered to take care of that problem and he was doing a stellar job before Wei WuXian's interference. Bringing Wen Ning back into an unreliable existence is pure heresy and not a single cultivator is going to support Wei WuXian in this madness, especially not the purer-than-thou GusuLans.
