BEY

I was so excited to move into college that I couldn't even sleep. My mind never stopped racing long enough for me to.

There wasn't a thing I wasn't looking forward to. Parties, alcohol, hoes, no rules, and only sleeping a couple feet away from my friends.

My roommate situation was honestly manageable. Her being sheltered and innocent didn't have shit to do with me having a fun time, but she didn't seem all that uptight from what I'd observed. Just inexperienced.

She said she didn't really like the smell of weed so just to spray the room if I ever brought the smell in, and that was pretty much the only rule she had regarding my habits.

We didn't talk consistently, but it was enough to get a feel of her and get to know her a little. She was pretty easy going, the only thing she asked for was the bed by the window. I reluctantly let her have it because she was probably going to be in the room more than me.

Our dorms were set up almost like an apartment. There were two rooms with two people in each room, but we had a shared common area and kitchen. We only had to share our bathrooms with our roommates so it was definitely way better than having a communal bathroom, even if it was a little bit more expensive.

I got in touch with her about moving in and since she was flying in, she was going to get there way later than me. I was glad, especially since my mom and sister were coming with me to move in. They could be a lot.

We had to drive about two hours and it wasn't until we were actually pulling up to the school that my stomach started to turn with anxiety.

I wasn't one to be overly emotional so I tried to just brush it off, but the feeling wouldn't go away.

We got to my building and checked in to get my key and a cart to bring all my stuff in. Parks Hall, room 912. Our building was named after Rosa Parks which was fitting since we went to an HBCU.

Robyn and Kelly already moved in the previous day, but I didn't get to talk to them much before my mom made me go into my room and lock in.

Long story short, moving in was the most stressful experience of my life.

My mom was in full control freak mode, trying to clean everything and argue with me about where or how things should be put around the room. Solange was just taking up space and complaining, she should've stayed home.

All the arguing was making me sad in a way, I was going to miss our hectic family dynamic.

It took hours to set everything up, but I was proud of the end result. I put music posters by my bed and vinyls by my desk, a sunset lamp, a cart by my bed, and a grey sticker headboard and a black bed set with a grey throw blanket. It was as homey as it was going to get.

After we finished setting up my room, we went to the grocery store so we could get some groceries. The only thing getting cooked in the kitchen was ramen, but I'd accept the free groceries since my mom was paying.

Once all the groceries were away, my mom was still lingering around so she wanted to go walk around campus. She came with me to tour so there wasn't anything she hadn't seen already but part of me wasn't ready for her to leave either.

There were only so many things we could see on the campus so it was eventually time to go. We were all practically dragging our feet to the car.

I was doing my best to hold it together through saying goodbye until my mom started crying. I did the best I could but I admittedly shed a tear or two. They were only going to be a couple hours away but it was still going to be a big change. I'd never been away from them for more than a couple days.
