BEY
"Happy birthdayyy!"
I was startled awake by yelling and opened my eyes to all three of my roommates standing over me with a cake.
It took me a minute to comprehend what was happening and calm my heart rate down from how they woke me up, but once I settled I realized how cute the gesture was. "Aww! Thank y'all, you shouldn't have."
Along with the cake, once I sat up I realized they also decorated my side of the room. I had no clue how they did it, but there were balloons everywhere. They had ones taped to the wall that said Happy Birthday and ones filled with helium in the shape of a 19.
How did I stay asleep throughout all of that?
Kelly was the first to give me a hug since Robyn was holding the cake. "Happy birthday, sis."
Onika waited until Kelly took a step back, then shimmied her way in front of her. "Happy birthday."
"Thank you, even though you all had my heart racing like there was a home invasion. Was this your idea?" It had Onika written all over it.
She coyly smiled and nodded. "Just some of it."
"The 19 shots throughout the day thing was mine and Kellys idea." Robyn was too excited to not interrupt us. "Get her first shot, Kells."
My eyes widened and I chuckled a little. "Huh? Shot? Can I at least brush my teeth first?"
The next thing I knew I was being tossed one of those mini bottles of Don Julio and Kelly had a camera in my face. "You can brush your teeth after. I'm going to take videos of all the shots so I can put them together in a big video. Go ahead, hurry up and take it before I run out of storage."
They were insane, but I wasn't a bitch and it was my birthday so I had to take the shot. Those little bottles were definitely more than a shot, but I drank it all and then rushed to go to the bathroom while gagging. Thank God my birthday was on a Saturday.
I brushed my teeth to both get the taste out of my mouth and start getting ready for the day. I washed my face while I was at it and when I went back, the room was empty except for Onika.
She had a look on her face that completely gave away that she was up to something. She couldn't have a poker face to save her life.
"What?" I asked because I already knew it has to be something.
She swayed side to side while trying to look innocent. "I got you a little gift."
"Really?" I couldn't help the shock on my face. I wasn't expecting her to get me anything, especially since I didn't really make a big deal out of my birthday.
She smiled and nodded. "Of course. I started working on it the minute they told me when your birthday was, even though we weren't talking." She pulled up her bed skirt and then pulled out a basket from under her bed. "It's not much, but I tried."
The second she set it down at my desk, I started to get a better look at the entire basket. My heart immediately melted. She got me all my favorite snacks, a new hoodie, candles because I was always lighting one, a new black water bottle, and a spider-man lego set and little plushie because she knew I liked comic books.
There was a folded piece of paper on top, but I had to give Onika a hug before I could stop to read it. "Thank you." Everything was so personalized to me and proved that she really listened to me.
I accidentally lifted her a little bit off the ground so she giggled. "I'm glad you like it, I was a little bit worried."
"I love it, I'm going to start that Lego set before we go out tonight." I had no clue how she got such perfect gifts for me. "But I'm the most excited to read this."
