Y/N's POV

It was late morning when Y/N woke, still leaning against Shadow. To her surprise, they hadn't been attacked all night. The remains of the small fire they had had that night sizzled quietly nearby. She pushed herself up, Shadow's hand sliding off her back as she did so. Suddenly, she realised there was a distinct advantage that she and Shadow had over Mephiles — before she and Blaze had broken out, she had snatched a remote to control the speakers the two of them had built. Maybe if she could use it to transfer the speakers to Mephiles' base, she could use them to deafen and distract him while she and Shadow worked together to take him down.

"Let's see. That one's for the volume, that's to switch them on, so that must be to move them around," she muttered to herself as she examined the controller. She pictured where the speakers were in her mind and hit the centre button on the movement pad. Eyes closed, she waited for a few seconds, before tentatively opening one then the other.
"Yes!" she laughed. The speakers had been transported to the clearing! She hit the centre button again, sending them back to where they started: Eggman's lair.

"Ugh. I'm never sleeping against a rough log again," Shadow had just woken up.

"I know the feeling. Come on."
Y/N pulled him to his feet. A sudden tiny explosion hit the ground right behind her, scorching her tail.

"What the -!"
The pair took a couple of steps back to avoid a second blast. Three copies - a Knuckles, a Rouge and a Blaze - were stood on the edge of the clearing, each carrying something similar to a gun. Lasers.

"Since when were they armed with those?"
"Since now I guess. You ready for this?"
"I was born ready."
"I've got your back."
Y/N nodded and threw her first fireball straight for the Knuckles and the Blaze clones. Meanwhile, Shadow dived and rolled to avoid two lasers shot by fake Rouge. Fake Blaze was unfazed by the flames, but Knuckles melted into a pile of red metal. False Rouge was getting battered by Shadow's blade, which he wielded like he'd been doing it all his life. Y/N watched him, losing interest in the fight, feeling a quiet admiration for him. He looked so much stronger when he fought. His quills flew out behind him. She couldn't take her eyes off him, until he turned, having dismantled fake Rouge, and yelled.

"Watch out!"
Y/N's head flicked around. False Blaze had fired a laser at her again. Time seemed to slow down. She threw up her hands, a wall of fire leaping up to protect her, absorbing the beam. More flames exploded from her, but these were cold, like her anger. Cold fire. Opposites combined. Fake Blaze screamed, engulfed by the freezing flames. Within seconds, she was gone.

"How... How did I..."
"I don't know, but Mephiles better be ready when we come for him."

Y/N looked into Shadow's eyes. She couldn't help herself, throwing herself into his arms.

"Hey, hey. What's wrong?"
"That's the problem. I don't know."
"There's got to be something. You can tell me."
"I know I can, it's just... I don't know what's wrong.

"It's OK. We'd better be getting ready we're going to beat him any time soon."
