Each of the sisters parted as soon as they got to school. Y/N kept her head down and headed for Science. She had no idea what they were doing — she had been in the library for ages — but she was sure to catch up quickly. Slumping down into her place, she glanced out of the window. Crows were circling over something black in the field.

"What the... What is that?"

Whatever the object was, it was clearly alive, or at least it had been very recently. If it had been dead for a while the crows wouldn't have been circling. They'd be down there pecking at the carcass. She squinted at the object, trying to get a better view, but was forced to look away as her tutor, Mr Pear, walked in to start class. One thing was for sure, she was going to check it out one way or another.

Lucky for her, straight after Science was Games. They were working on their basketball skills, and, as the courts were on the other side of the field, her class would have to walk past the black thing. As they went past, the crows scattered, squawking, revealing black and red spikes. Y/N jogged over to it, crouching to get a better look.

"Um, Miss Luna?"
"Yes?"
"You might want to take a look at this."
Her teacher, Miss Luna, sprinted over, followed by the rest of the class. Y/N carefully picked up a stick and used it to slowly roll the thing over onto it's back.

"What is it?"
"It looks like some sort of hedgehog to me."

"Well, whatever it is, we need to help it."
"I'll carry it."

She scooped the hedgehog thing up in her arms, trying to avoid contact with the deep wound in it's chest. Many of the girls watching her sniggered or let out disgusted noises as she walked past them. She simply gave them a dirty look and headed back into school with Miss Luna.

"Look, I want you to stay with it. Make sure nobody disturbs it. Can I trust you to do that?"
"You can count on me."
"Good. Keep doing that until it is well enough to look after itself. OK?"
"Got it."
"Good girl. I'll let the other teachers know about you keeping an eye on it.."
"But what about the school nurse?"
"She's too busy to take care of one thing at a time. She'll need your help to look after it."
