Danger was never far away as Y/N and Shadow trudged through the forest. One minute they were vaulting over a tree trunk, the next they were sliding towards a steep cliff! Shadow managed to grab onto a branch to stop himself falling, but Y/N slipped towards the edge.

"Shadow! Help!"
"Hang on! I'm coming!" Shadow let go of the branch and slid down so he was just above her. Hooking his feet into a root, he grabbed hold of her hand just as she went over.

"Shadow, what do I do? I can't hold on for long. I... I'm scared."
"I know, I know. We're gonna make it though," he swallowed, gasping for breath, "Listen, let go."
"What?! Are you crazy?" Y/N was shocked.

"No, I'm not. Let go, and you'll be safe."
"But-"

"I'm telling you the truth. Let go, and you'll be safe."
Y/N looked up at him, fear in her eyes. He looked back down at her, muscles tense, "I promise you'll be safe."
Closing her eyes, she slowly released his hand. Screaming, she fell over the edge, certain she was going to die. Something suddenly slammed into her, snatching her out of the air.

"See? Told you you'd be safe," Shadow's voice whispered in her ear.

"Shadow!" Y/N laughed, resting her head on his chest. He had swung in like Tarzan on a long vine and caught her. He set her down on a ledge on the other side of the pit.

"You alright?"
"I am now, thanks to you."
"Is that what I think it is?" He was looking across the forest below and beneath them at a small, almost doorlike opening.

"We can get to Mephiles through there. I bet if we sneak in we can take him by surprise."

About three hours later, Y/N stood against the wall of the arena, pressing her back into it behind a bush to keep herself hidden from the cameras. She was waiting for the panel to open, to reveal a passage that would take her and Shadow to face Mephiles. She had been standing there for fifteen minutes and nothing had happened

"Grr. When is this thing gonna open? I'm bored."
"I know you are. You've said that ten times already," Shadow was in a similar position on the other side of where the door was going to open. Suddenly, it lifted itself up, releasing a Sonic clone. Like twin bolts of black lightning, the pair shot through the gap into the darkness.

"You know I'm pretty sure we're walking in circles."

Y/N held up her burning hand, "I know what you mean. Haven't we passed that slash in the wall twice already?"

"I think we have at some point."
"Hold on, there's something underneath it," she dug her fiery fingers onto a small gap, pulling a layer of stone away from the wall, revealing a second passageway.

"Should we go down it? We don't know where it goes."
"Better than walking round in circles all day. Come on."
Shadow vaulted over the raised rock at the beginning of the path before reaching back to help her over. Together, they made their way down the corridor.

"Wait. Can you hear rustling?"
"A bit, yeah."
Y/N looked up slowly, "Oh great. Tiny bats."
"If we wake them up, Mephiles will know about our escape."
"He probably already knows."
"True."
"Just stay very quiet. Maybe they're asleep, since it's still day."

Y/N kept the crackling of her flames to a minimum. Aware that the bats could probably hear her heartbeat, she crept forward.

"I think I can see a door."
"You're right. I can too."

Still keeping their footsteps as quiet as they could, the pair darted to the door. Loud yells and groans of pain, along with cackling laughter, kept echoing out.

"What with all that noise, it's a miracle the bats haven't woken up already."

"Does that sound like Mephiles to you?"
"Very much so. You don't think..."
"He's hurting the others."
"We've got to help them."
"Got your back."
"I've got yours too."
Shadow rested one hand on the door, "You ready for this?"

"As ready as I'll ever be."
Taking a deep breath, he slashed one of his blades through the wood.
