Be nicer ....

Chapter 85
Friday December 29th
Mallory's POV

"Did the scans for bed 9 come back yet?"

"They just popped up" I answered Beau's question, moving the mouse across the screen to pull them up for him.

"And what about the discharge papers for 4?" Beau came around the desk, leaning over my shoulder to glance at the CT on the monitor.

"Printed and waiting for you" I motioned to my side where the documents were laying.

"You're the best" Beau chuckled, stepping back which was my cue to close out the scan and resume what I was doing before he walked over. I was currently behind the desk of the ER, handling all of the miniscule tasks or scut work that I was assigned to. I've been back at work for a little over a week now, and each day has been different. Some attendings let me participate in more things than others, aside from surgery of course, because of my injury. Today is one that's more laid back considering I'm underneath Dr. Evans mentoring again, and when I asked him this morning when can I return to full duty, he told me he'll see how today goes.

Even though my tasks are a bit boring and mundane, I've had fun working with Beau so far. It's been a while since we've been paired together, and it's been nice to have someone to talk to when the crowd has been a bit slow. He mentioned that we need to find a time where we can all go out again as a group, and I definitely agreed with him. Sure we had the gala, but that was technically still a work event, and it would be nice to just have a night out. Plus, the conversation made us realize that New Years Eve is just around the corner, so it was perfect timing.

"I try" I chuckled back to him, handing him the discharge papers I knew that he would want.

"Thank you" Beau took them and graciously headed off to the patients. He'll come back around every so often, like he has been doing all morning, to ask something or tell me a funny anecdote about what I've missed. As he walked away, the phone began to ring so I answered and jumped into a conversation with UNOS, picking up where we left off earlier.

"Help! Help!!" I heard an individual shout from the main area, looking up and out to see what was going on. As nurses and Dr. Evans began to rush over to the people that needed support, I pressed the phone closer to my ear to try and hear what Anna, the nice lady on the phone, was saying. Dr. Evans was waiting for a transplant approval and enough of the medical professionals had already rushed over, so I knew I was to stay put. However, I did watch the scene play out in front of me while nodding along to Anna's speech, just in case it escalated and more hands were needed.

Everyone was rushing, those awaiting care nearby grew panicked expressions on their faces due to the commotion, and I could tell by Dr. Evans movements that they were about to rush out of here. I could hear Anna asking me if I had any further questions, and I rushed out a no in response, reaching for the other phone.

"Let's move!" Dr. Evans shouted at his team, starting to wheel the bed with the unconscious patient down to the operating floor. I pleasantly and quickly got Anna off the phone, bringing the other to my ear to call down to the OR, knowing somebody had to and it's the least that I could do to help save that woman's life. Starting to speak to the person on the other end of the line, Dr. Evans looked over in my direction and shouted out an order. "Book the OR and page Campbell"

I responded with a thumbs up as I was mid-booking the OR that he needed, and I unlocked my phone to send an urgent page to our hospital's best cardio surgeon. I watched as it went through and put the phone back on the receiver, hearing the emergency room simmer down as they transferred her out of there.
