I pulled out a pretty decent outfit and waited until last minute to put it on. I had decided to stay in my sweatpants and remain as calm as possible until elevator guy showed up. My nerves were going wild and having drank three cups of horrible coffee, I could find nothing better to do but walk up and down. I looked down the window and remembered the feeling of his hands around my waste. The chill down my spine at that moment, snapped me back to what was supposed to be my reality. I felt like a little clown, a puppet of this boy; I felt like a kid raising its hopes for no reason. If I had left work earlier yesterday, walked a little faster, he would have never have bumped into me, we would have never gone for coffee and I would be peacefully dead. My heart jumped at the reminder. I wouldn't be here right now. What if this meeting was what was holding me back from ending everything? Closing my eyes, a thought flashed through my mind. I hated to admit that this could be even a little bit true, but.. had elevator boy saved my life?
Shaking away the thought, I let my hair loose and brushed it with my fingers. It was almost 8:30, and I was still in sweats and a plain shirt. Hearing the doorbell from downstairs, I poked my head out the window, "I'll be right down", I looked and saw elevator boy smiling with a thumbs up. I put my jeans on in no time, threw a white shirt over and smeared some red lipstick. And I did something I had never done before; I smiled at the mirror. Well, this was it.
Opening the door of the building, I had to stop for a moment and admire how attractive he looked. He had shaved the small beard he had when I met him, and was wearing a white shirt with brown pants.
"Wow, you look good," he smiled looking right into my eyes and then turning towards the car, "come on we gotta start heading there. The party's already started".
I realized how unsuitable it was for my character to be falling for someone like him. I was more of a romantic type, I liked guys with cliché lines, I liked guys who were adventurous and I definitely did not like guys who managed to tell me just that I looked "good" on our fist date and remind me how late we were. I mean, I wasn't even sure it was our first date or whatever, and I knew I didn't exactly look stunning with jeans and a shirt, but "good" was a little discouraging. I remembered I was still wearing my black sleeveless, undershirt, and figured it would be a good way to look "better". Besides, a party calls for some sexy right?
We jumped in his car and with hurried movements, I took off the shirt I was wearing, remaining in my black undershirt. He stepped on the brakes abruptly, and looked at me suspiciously. I sighed with relief as I saw a smile crack on his face and grabbed the chance. "Better now?". He bit his lip and shook his head in approval. We weren't even five minutes on the road until we reached a huge, well-lit building, with parked cars flooding the place, and loud music. "Um.. whose party did you say this is?" I looked around, feeling the lump in my throat. Just the thought of how many people would be inside made me nervous. I was never the social type, how can I be so stupid to rush into this without even remembering I had not been to a single party throughout high school? And I didn't know a single person who was going to be there, besides this boy.. whose name I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW. Panic started to flow through my veins and my hands started getting sweaty. I prayed to God he would change his mind, but instead, taking the keys out of the engine he opened the door and got out of the car. Alright, I had nothing to lose. I saw him walking my way and opening the door with a smile,
"You ok?" he asked worriedly.
I nodded faintly and threw my heels on the floor. He looked down as I stepped in the black leather shoes, and as soon as they were on I looked back up his face for a sign of encouragement. Giving me his hand, he pulled me standing, locked the car and we headed in. I could not feel my fingers anymore and every step felt like thunder to my increasing headache. I didn't belong anywhere near here. This place is for happy people, people who love life, people who have friends. I was nowhere near that category, and I squeezed on elevator boy's hands to stop myself from running away. If it was meant for us to meet, if it was meant for him to save my life, maybe it was meant for him to change me, to make me someone better; someone who goes to parties and actually has fun, someone with friends and who is loved, someone who loves life. All I had to do was walk in there and find out.
In the club, almost all the lights were out and the music was so loud that you barely could hear your own voice, and I didn't let go of his hand for a single second. I squirmed through the crowd until we finally reached the bar, where elevator boy found his friends and introduced me. All I could do was nod because I couldn't hear a thing they were saying and as they realized this, they dropped the conversation and offered us a drink. I started tasting different drinks and the boys kept them coming. It must have been a little earlier than midnight when the music went even louder and all the lights shut off. Last thing I remember is dancing... on a table... with elevator boy's hands wrapped around my waist. And then I woke up in a warm bed, in a room that wasn't mine.
