Chapter 6

Stupid

We stared into each others' eyes. My thoughts were a mess. I didn't want her to find out of it. That was the whole reason why I planned to stay away from her. But it was like it was impossible. Somehow we always ended up with each other.

How much did she saw? I needed to find out that first. Maybe I was just overreacting. Maybe she didn't know what happened after she passed out and she just wanted to find out. But even then, what would I tell her?

"What are you talking about?" I asked playing dumb. She looked away from me to the ground.

"Um, well, the last thing I remember clearly was, that Jacob smashed my head to a car really fast, actually too fast. Then I heard growls and.. barking. I heard you saying to someone that Jacob and Jasper were fighting in the woods." She looked back at me, her eyes full of questions. She was too perspective. Even when she was just half conscious she almost got everything right. I didn't know what to tell her. How should I explain the barking and growling part?

There is one way out of this. I had to tell her that she is crazy thinking this. I had to lie to her. I didn't want to but that was the only way to keep her safe in the dark.

"This is ridiculous, Bella." I looked straight in to her eyes, my face was a mask. "Don't be stupid."

"Oh! So now I am stupid?" She said through clenched teeth and I saw angry tears shining in her eyes. I felt my stomach drop at the sight. "I know what I heard Edward!" I saw how hurt she was because of my words and I wanted to tell her the truth so badly, but then an image of her being killed by me flashed before my eyes. No. I needed to keep her safe.

"Your imagination must be really good then." I said getting frustrated.

"Then what happened tell me." Determination shined in her eyes.

I waited few seconds thinking what to say to her.
If I get this right she will at least accept my lie. "I was at the parking lot talking with Jasper when we spotted you with Black. We didn't give much thought to it, until we heard you hitting your head. We immediately ran to you. Jasper grabbed Black and dragged him away, but he escaped from his hold and ran into the woods. Jasper went after him and they started to fight. Meanwhile I held you and phoned my siblings. Rose and Emmett went to break up the fight, Alice and me brought you to the hospital." I said with a strain voice. I didn't really lie most of the things happened, I just left out certain parts and edited a few... Okay, this is ridiculous. Let's face it, I lied to her and it felt bad.

"And what about the barking and growlig?" She was very stubborn. Good thing that I was too.

"I don't know what you heard. But there wasn't any of that." I said. "Anyway why can't you just say: thank you, then get over it." I was now angry that I still have to lie to her and not just tell her straight.

Bella's voice disturbed my inner battle and I looked at her. "Thank you." She said with an icy voice, which went straight to my heart. She hates me. I felt my heart break. But it was better this way. She would stay away from me. Even if it would kill me slowly.

I hoped I could end this discussion now. "You won't let it go right?" I didn't know why I asked that. Probably to hear her voice one last time before she starts to stay away from me.

"No." She said with a tiny bit of hurt in her eyes. My words hurt her, I didn't want that. But it was still better for her to be hurt a little because of my words than my temper. I imagined accidentally phasing next to her.. NO! I couldn't even think about that.

"In that case I hope you enjoy disappointment." I said coldly.

"Why do you even care?" Oh, if she knew how much I really cared...

"I don't want to." I wispered and I knew she heard me because she sent me a glare. I just looked away from her.

She didn't know how I meant that. I didn't want to care about her to keep her safe but in truth. I wanted to, hell, I did. But she couldn't know that.
