Chapter 40

Black Clouds

We continued to talk, but it was time for Bella to go inside since I could see her fighting to keep her eyes open. It was a long day and tomorrow is also going to be an interesting one as it seems. Bella didn't change her mind about meeting the others so we worked out the details.

"So, I'll be the creepy guy on the corner." I said as we stood up.

"And I'll be the girl driving past you." She chuckled and kissed my cheek.

"Good luck finding the wolf den alone." I laughed as her smile turned into a pout.

I leaned down kissing her forehead, the smile reappearing on her face.

"Call me if you have a nightmare." She tried to say it sternly. I nodded dutfully and kissed her one last time before she went inside. The warmth in my heart staying strong as I turned my back and started to run back to the house.

"How could you not tell us that Bella and you are together?" Alice's high pitched, excited voice pierced my ears, as soon as I closed the door behind me.

"Thanks Carlisle." I said sarcastically. His answer was just a shrug and a smile.

"This is fantastic Edward." The calm in Esme's voice was suprising. I excepted her to be as excited as Alice. "When can I meet her?" Ah, there it was. An excited smile lighting up her face, her eyes shining brightly.

"Well, actually, she is coming over tomorrow." I told them. Esme beamed while Alice grinned and looked at Jasper excitedly.

"Oh my God! We have to clean the house and cook something tomorrow. What does she like, Edward? Pasta? Chicken? Pizza? Or is she on some special diet?" She was babbling excitedly and I looked at Carlisle for some help.

He laughed as he pulled Esme away. "Darling calm down. Let's sleep first and we can figure something out tomorrow." Esme was listing recepie after recepie as they took the stairs. Before they disappreared from our view Carlisle threw me a wink.

Rosalie was passing us as she headed upstairs. She nodded at me with a half smile. No words needed, her look telling me enough. The same couldn't be said about Jasper, who was staring at me with narrowed eyes. Alice had disappeared somewhere from his side.

"What?" I frowned.

He shrugged and said nonchantly. "You look happy."

"I am?" Uncertainty creeping into my voice at his stare.

He raised his eyebrows and looked at me with faked disbelief. "Edward Cullen in love and he is not denying it? Hell must be frozen." I pushed him by his shoulder and laughed with him. "Never believed that we would see you truly happy though."

"What do you mean?" I furrowed my brows

"Well, you always pushed away, unconsciously, the ones you loved or who loved you.  And when we didn't back off you shut down a bit. It was relief when you imprinted. We knew you won't be able to fight with the imprinting. However, you still tried. We knew that this girl will show you that you are lying to yourself by believing your father's words. She freed you from your own burden. And finally, we can see you without your blck clouds." As he finished I couldn't help it, I hugged him tightly. His arms coming up too.

Our moment however, was interrupted by Emmett. "Group hug!" He shouted and easily  embraced us with his big arms. Only for a second though, as we broke out.

"Good to see you too, Emmett." I brushed off my shoulders as if I wanted the memory of his touch gone. He just laughed and patted ma back and winked at me. 

 "Oh, man! I can't believe I lost!" He yelled suddenly while eyeing me up and down. I frowned and looked between the two.

"What are you talking about?" His eyes widened before he looked away whistling. I glanced at Jasper who looked pissed off. "Jasper?" I asked with a low voice.

"It's nothing, you know we always bet on stupid things." He shrugged.

I stepped closer to Emmett, letting a growl rummble in my chest. "Okay! Okay. We were just betting about when you and Bella would get together." He shrugged and my eyes widened in disbelief.

I think my expression told everything because Emmett panicked and pointed at the stairs. "The others were in it too!" He shouted, throwing them under the bus.

"Emmett!" Came from the others while Jasper punched him in the shoulder.

"Who won?" I asked shaking my head, but couldn't hold back a little smile.

"I did!" Came Rosalie's voice from upstairs. The smugness dripping from it. I heard Alice groan in response.

I couldn't help, but laugh. Afterall, it was a suprise that Rose won.

"Edward! Run!"  I heard a familiar voice yell.

Next I was running in the forest with someone on my back. Something right behind us.

Another image. I was on the edge of a cliff, facing someone, who was clearly not human and Bella was standing behind me.

I shot up from my bed. The flashes were like when I had dreamed of Bella being killed. They must have some truth to them about the future. My mind was racing, but one question was clear.

What the hell?
