Chapter 18

Dreams come true

"We caught a vampire's scent." I looked at Carlisle and Rosalie and we nodded, agreeing silently. The next second we were out running on fours. I heard Carlisle shout to Esme and Alice to lock down the house bfore he phased too.

As we were running I read in Emmett's mind what happened. Apparently they caught a scent of a vampire, they followed it, but eventually lost it and that's where Jasper was waiting.

"Did you recognise the scent?" Carlisle asked.

"We are not sure. Something is covering it but we know that it's Victoria or James." I felt my stomach sank with illogical fear. I had fought with vampires in the past, why was I so nervous about this one?

We reached Jasper who was still trying to catch the scent. When we sniffed Rose and me whined. The vampire's scent mixed with this stuff, that was covering it, was burning our nose. The others tried to catch the scent while I looked around. When I did, I knew why I was so nervous about this vampire.

It was the same place.

It was like in the dream. The same place. I felt my breath fasten. I knew that I had to get to the meadow to save Bella. And I knew the path.

These thoughts ran through my head within mere seconds. The next moment I was running on top speed on the familiar path. It felt like a race against time.

"Edward?! What happened? Did you catch the scent?" Carlisle asked and I knew the others were behind me.

"No. But I know where he is."

"How?! How do you know Edward? There's no trace of scent here." Jasper asked.

"I know that Jasper, but trust me."

As I was running I pleaded in my head that I would make it on time. In the back of my mind I knew the others could hear it too, but right then I didn't give a fuck about it. In my head I saw Bella's lifeless body covered in blood, her eyes looking at me with disappointment. I saw all of the dreams where I was too late and pleaded that wouldn't happen this time.

As I saw the meadow I growled and barked fiercely. When I entered the clearing I stepped right between James and Bella. I was right, he was at the meadow with her. I turned to James shielding Bella. He was in a crouch and his eyes were red. I growled at him.

He was trying to trick me by moving to the left or the right, but fortunately I didn't buy it. He was ready to attack when he froze. He probably realised that I wasn't alone. Before the others entered the clearing, James turned around and ran. The others now right behind him.

When they were in the woods again, my mind turned back to Bella. Fear gripped me as I thought about what she had seen. I was afraid that if I turn around she would run away screaming that I am a monster or she wouldn't be behind me.

I didn't smell any blood, but I needed to see with my own eyes that she was okay. I slowly turned around. She was standing right there. Unharmed. I felt my heart fill with relief.

She was watching me with wide eyes, her breathing was faster then usual, just like her heart beat. She wasn't screaming, not yet. I bravely went up to her and stopped one step away from her. She was so small next to me. I lowered my head to her eyelevel and looked into her eyes. I felt our soul connect again. She watched me with fascination. She still didn't scream. "Wow." She breathed, her voice was full of awe. She stepped a little bit closer and reached out her hand toward me. But then a thought hit me.

"Edward! We need you! He is too fast!" I looked into Carlisle's mind and saw that the bastard was running away. I really wanted Bella to touch me so she could see I didn't mean harm, but I needed to make her safe first. So before her hand could reach me I turned away and started to run after the others. Before I reached the woods I looked back to Bella one last time. She was looking at me, then she turned around and ran into the woods. I noted to myself that I had to make sure she arrived home safely.

Now that Bella was as safe as she could be at the moment, I concentrated on James. I felt rage taking over my body and mind. I was going to kill the bloodsucker this time, no matter what.
