Sara

They were talking about me. I'm pretty sure they were talking about me.

What were they saying? Were they going to tell me something? Is Luke going to tell me something? What was he going to tell me?

What if they kick me out?

"No, no, no." I told myself. "They're not going to kick you out."

I laid in my bed, thinking of what they could have wanted to tell me.

"WHAT?!" I heard someone yell downstairs.

"SHHHHH!"

I quietly got out of bed, out of my room and down the stairs, again. I silently stood on the last step, listening carefully to the conversation.

"How much did you bet?"

"Ten grand."

"LUKE, ARE YOU NUTS?!"

"I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking straight."

"She's gonna win, Luke. And if she doesn't, she might hurt you. Or even worse, KILL YOU!"

"I know!"

"Why would you bet on it? Why would you even try to find her?"

"I just thought that I might've won."

"Won the bet?"

"No."

"Then won what?"

"Sara."

"YOU BET ON SARA, TOO?!"

"SHHHH!"

"On Sara? ON SARA?!"

"SHUSH! She said she'd take Sara to her papa. I told her she shouldn't. She said she would, and we kept going back and forth until someone bet that she really would. I got in on the bet and I shouldn't have. May said that once she won, I'd not only owe her money, but she'd show me her dead body." I heard Luke start to cry.

"Oh my god."

"I'm so sorry. I don't know why I did it, but it's too late to back out. May said she'd take Sara next week, and that she'd let me say good by-"

"Shh. You hear that?"

I saw a shadow appear out the kitchen. I ran up the stairs and pressed my back against the wall where they couldn't see me.

"I think someone was listening."

"Who?"

"Let me see."

I sprinted silently for my room as I heard soft footsteps on the stairs. I tried not to make a noise while opening my door, but it creaked. I heard the footsteps get faster and closer. I slid inside my room with the door half-way open and jumped onto my bed. I crawled under the duvet and heard the footsteps get closer.

I shut my eyes closed and curled up into a ball. I made a snoring sound, and stayed still. I heard my door creak open. I could hear loud breathing, and my heart began to race.

"Hello?" Someone whispered. "Sara, are you awake?"
